Flying a small plane over Palau - how to book and everything you need to know
Booking a Small Plane Tour to Fly Over Palau's Iconic Sights
If you think the only way to experience Palau’s beauty is by boat or diving deep beneath the waves, think again! One of the most breathtaking ways to see this Pacific paradise is from the sky—flying over the famous Rock Islands, the Milky Way Lagoon, and some of the most stunning landscapes in the world.
Because I spent so much time trying to figure out everything I needed before our trip and where to book everything, I decided to create a separate post for it so you don’t have to do it yourself. So here is everything you need to know to make the dream of seeing Palau from above, a reality.
What to Expect on a Scenic Flight Over Palau
Imagine taking off in a small plane, the wind rushing through the open doors (yes, doors off if you want!), and looking down on a sea of emerald-green islands floating in crystal-clear waters. Most tours will take you over key sights like:
- The Rock Islands: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, these limestone formations covered in lush vegetation are stunning from above, revealing their intricate shapes and hidden bays.
- Milky Way Lagoon: Famous for its natural white mud, this lagoon looks even more magical from the air, with its bright turquoise waters contrasting against the lush greenery.
- Jellyfish Lake: Usually home to thousands of stingless jellyfish, this lake is one of Palau’s most unique attractions.
- Long Beach: A stunning sandbar that stretches far into the ocean, and appears and disappears with the tides.
- Blue Corner and German Channel: Some of the best dive sites in the world, even more spectacular when you see the vibrant reef drop-offs from above.
How to Book Your Flight
There might be more ways of doing it, and maybe more have come after I visited, but this is what I used and was very happy with.
Pacific Mission Aviation is the top operator for scenic flights over the Rock Islands. Their tours take off from Palau International Airport, and they even offer the option to fly in a doorless Cessna for unbeatable photography opportunities. A 40-minute flight costs about $270 per person if you are two people. Prices are slightly cheaper if you are a bigger group. The maximum amount is 5 people. They might also charge some more if you want to have the door open. Which I highly recommend you do. It was slightly scary in the beginning, but also one of the coolest experiences I have had. They offer free hotel pick-up and drop-off. I know it is an expensive activity, but I don’t regret it one bit. If you have the opportunity to add this to your trip, I highly recommend it.
You can read more about it and book your flight here.
When to Fly?
Most scenic flights in Palau take off in the morning, when the skies are clearer and the light is perfect for photography. While Palau has rain throughout the year, the dry season from January to April offers the best chance of good weather. But even in the wetter months, rain usually falls in the late afternoon or evening, so your flight is unlikely to be affected.
Is It Worth It?
Absolutely! Seeing Palau from the sky is a totally unique experience that will leave you speechless. Whether you’re a photographer looking to capture the perfect shot or a traveler who wants a bird’s-eye view of one of the most beautiful places on Earth, this is an adventure you don’t want to miss.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your camera, hop in the plane, and get ready to see Palau like never before!
