One thing that can be tricky when planning your trip to Koh Lanta is that there isn't one obvious place to stay. Unlike many Thai islands where nearly everyone ends up in the same area, Koh Lanta offers several very different beach communities, each with its own atmosphere, advantages, and personality. Whether you're looking for lively beach bars and sunset cocktails, a romantic boutique resort, a luxury hideaway surrounded by rainforest, or a quiet bungalow where you can hear the waves from your bed, you'll find it somewhere on the island.

The biggest mistake you can make when booking accommodation in Koh Lanta is choosing a hotel before deciding which area suits your travel style. In my opinion, the beach and neighborhood matter just as much as the hotel itself.

After spending time exploring the island, and basing myself in various areas over time, I've mapped out the various spots, why they’re great bases and for who they are best suited. I’ve also added hotels I recommend in each one.

Best Areas to Stay in Koh Lanta

To make it a bit easier to navigate I've decided to map out this article with the various areas from North to South. Starting with Klong Dao Beach on the northern tip of the island and ending with Kantiang Bay on the southern part.

Klong Dao Beach: Best Area for Families

This area is strangely both quite popular, but also in some ways a bit overlooked. The only way I can explain it is that there are lots of hotels here, many of them huge resort, but unless you're actually staying here, you’ll most likely not visit this part of the island. There’s nothing special to do here, the beach is not my favourite and it doesn't have the same variety of restaurants and cozy bars as you’ll find further south. In my opinion at least.

That being said, it is worth noting that the beach here is wide, sandy, and has some of the calmest water on the island. So it’s more popular for families travelling with kids.

My personal opinion is that if you're looking for a really nice hotel or resort and just want to unwind for a couple of days, this is a great spot. But if you're looking for authentic vibes, chill beach bars and charming local food spots, then this might not be for you.

Long Beach (Phra Ae Beach): Best Area for First-Time Visitors

If it's your first time visiting Koh Lanta, Long Beach is the most popular place to stay.

Stretching for more than three kilometers along the island's west coast, Long Beach perfectly captures what makes Koh Lanta so special. It has enough restaurants, cafes, beach bars, and hotels to keep things convenient, but it still feels relaxed and far removed from the crowds you'll find in places like Phuket or Krabi.

What I loved most about Long Beach was the balance. You can spend the morning working from a beachfront cafe, enjoy an afternoon swim, and watch one of Koh Lanta's famous sunsets without ever needing to leave the area. It’s also easy to join one of the islands famous beach parties if that’s something you want.

Despite being one of the island's most popular beaches, it rarely feels crowded. The beach is so long and wide that there's always plenty of space. Many evenings I found myself walking along the sand and passing only a handful of people. The only time I saw crowds gathering was around sunset.

Long Beach is ideal for first-time visitors, couples, digital nomads, solo travelers, and anyone who wants easy access to restaurants and activities while still enjoying a peaceful beach holiday.

Klong Khong Beach: Best Area for Backpackers and Budget Travelers

Klong Khong is gaining popularity and is quickly becoming one of Koh Lanta's coolest areas.

Located between Long Beach and Klong Nin, it attracts a mix of backpackers, long-term travelers, digital nomads, and people who simply prefer a more laid-back atmosphere.

This is where you'll find some of the island's most relaxed beach bars, sunset spots, yoga studios, coworking spaces, and affordable accommodation. The vibe is noticeably more bohemian than elsewhere on the island. It’s also close enough to Long beach that you can get there with ease, both if you rent a scooter or by using one of the many tuk-tuks waiting around in the area.

I do have to admit that the beach itself isn't quite as perfect for swimming as Long Beach and the beaches further south. It’s quite rocky and I never really enjoyed my beach days here. So if you're coming to Koh Lanta for lazy beach days, I would probably not base myself here.

Since it's located more in the middle of the island, its easy to reach all the various spots around the island, and the area itself has lots of nice restaurants and bars, so I think it's a great spot to stay for a while. It’s one of the bases I actually stayed the longest.

I found myself returning to Klong Khong repeatedly, not necessarily for the beach, but for the atmosphere.

Klong Nin Beach: Best Area for Couples and Long-Term Travelers

If Long Beach is Koh Lanta's all-rounder, Klong Nin is its most charming beach community.

Located roughly halfway down the west coast, Klong Nin has developed into one of the island's most popular areas while somehow managing to maintain a laid-back atmosphere.

In this area you’ll find what I think are some of the islands most stunning beaches. Some long ones, but also some more remote and secluded ones. There are endless beaches to choose from here and you wont have any problems finding one you can enjoy almost alone.

Unlike Long Beach, the beachfront road feels a little more intimate, lined with small restaurants, cocktail bars, cafes, and boutique hotels. However, not nearly as many as other places on the island. So options can be more limited.

Most people rent a scooter to travel around Koh Lanta, but if you're not comfortable doing that I would reconsider basing myself here. Especially if you want to see more of the island, head out for a night or two, or eat at various spots every night.

This area is more remote so in my opinion this is the place you come to just relax, soak up the beach and not explore so much of the island.

Kantiang Bay: Best Area for Luxury and Natural Beauty

If someone asked me to picture the most beautiful part of Koh Lanta, Kantiang Bay would immediately come to mind. Located in the south of the island, this stunning bay is surrounded by lush green hills and offers some of the clearest water and most dramatic scenery anywhere on Koh Lanta.

That being said, it is very remote compared to other spots on the island. That’s a positive and a negative depending on how you want to travel.

The atmosphere here is completely different from Long Beach or Klong Nin. Life moves slower, development is limited, and nature takes center stage. This is where you come to disconnect.

My Personal Recommendation on Where to Stay in Koh Lanta

If it's your first visit, stay on Long Beach. It offers the best combination of beautiful scenery, excellent swimming, great restaurants, and convenient access to the rest of the island.

If you're visiting as a couple and want to relax, I would choose Kantiang Bay.

If you're backpacking or working remotely, Klong Khong is hard to beat.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Koh Lanta

One of the reasons Koh Lanta remains my favorite Thai island is that every area feels different.

Long Beach is lively but relaxed. Klong Nin is charming and atmospheric. Klong Khong is creative and laid-back. Kantiang Bay is breathtakingly beautiful. Klong Dao is convenient and family-friendly.

The best place to stay in Koh Lanta depends entirely on the kind of trip you're hoping to have. Fortunately, whichever area you choose, you'll still get the island's stunning sunsets, friendly atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and slower pace of life that make Koh Lanta so difficult to leave.

I hope this helps you plan your upcoming adventure to Koh Lanta and Thailand. If you have any questions about travel in Thailand, or just want to follow along as I travel the world full time, don‘t hesitate to reach out to me on social media. I would love to connect and help out!
