Ultimate Guide to Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro
How to Get to Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer is located at the top of Corcovado Mountain inside Tijuca National Park and there are actually several ways to reach the top, you can walk, take a van or go by train. The last one is my favourite and what I recommend you to do. The Corcovado Train is the most traditional and scenic way to reach Christ the Redeemer. This was also the original way to get there built at the same time as the statue, so that in itself makes it feel more special. You also get a beautiful view of Rio on the way up. Make sure to sit on the right-hand side of the train to get the best view. The trains leave pretty often so even if the queue looks pretty long it wont be as bad as one might think.
Tip: No need to book your tickets far in advance. I just did it the day before and I went in peak season. I would rather make sure to book on a day the weather is good, so wait for that.
What is the best time to visit Christ the Redeemer
So, I made the mistake of thinking that 10 AM was early enough to beat the worst crowds. Learn from me and either go at the very moment they open or wait until later in the evening to go if you want to avvoid the biggest crowds. There is no way you will escape the crowds completely, but the experience of being there is much, much better when you can actually walk around. At 10 AM you will be able to walk around, but slightly later than that you wont be able to walk all the way around to get the good views because its too crowded. This is a personal preference, but if I were to go again I would book the first train for sure.

What to Expect at Christ the Redeemer?
When you get of the train you have a couple of stairs to walk up before you reach the viewing plattform where the Christ is located. There are also different platforms offering beautiful views of different areas of Rio. On a sunny day I would definitely spend some time walking around and taking in the different views.
Getting a good photo with the statue can be tricky due to the crowds. Many people lie on the ground for the best upward angle! You can also get creative and use the platforms different angles to make it look like there are less people there. If you can find the space.
Located at the base of the statue you will find a small chapel. You will see people in there praying or even getting married.
The last time I was there I thought the crowds were a bit much so I ended up heading down the escalator to the little bar and have a drink and relax for a bit.
When you get back down again you will most likely find that there is no WiFi. Or at least this has happened both times I was there. So if you need to book an Uber back, try going in to the nearby coffee shop (they might also offer you a tour of their coffee workshop room upstairs if you ask) to drink a cup and use their WiFi.
Conclusion
Visiting Christ the Redeemer is a highlight of any trip to Rio de Janeiro. With a little planning, you can enjoy this iconic monument without stress. Make sure to book your tickets for a day without clouds (if possible) and try to get there either very early or later in the day.
