When most people think of Fiji, they picture dreamy white-sand beaches and overwater bungalows. But if you’re flying into the country, chances are you’ll be landing in Nadi, the vibrant gateway to Fiji’s islands, and this place has far more to offer than just a quick layover.

You can explore colourful temples, wander through tropical gardens, cover yourself in mud at a natural hot spring, relax on the beach or take a boat out to the Mamanuca Islands. Nadi really has a surprisingly good mix of experiences.

I spent several days exploring the area, and while Nadi doesn't have the picture-perfect beaches you'll find on some of Fiji's smaller islands, I found it to be a really convenient base for exploring. It also gives you the chance to experience a little more of everyday Fiji rather than spending your entire trip inside a resort.

So, if you're wondering what to do in Nadi, whether you have one day or several, here's everything I'd put on your list.

The Best Things to Do in Nadi

As always I’ll start with the fun part first, namely the top things to do in Nadi. If you also want more practical information like where you should base yourself and how to get around, just scroll further down and you’ll find everything you need.

Visit the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple

One of the first places I'd recommend visiting in Nadi is the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples in the Southern Hemisphere.

You really can't miss it. The temple is covered in colourful carvings and intricate Dravidian architecture, with brightly painted details that make it completely different from anything else you'll see around Nadi.

Make sure you dress respectfully when visiting. Your shoulders and knees should be covered, and you'll need to remove your shoes before entering. There are also certain areas where you’re not allowed to take pictures.

Explore Nadi Town

If you want to see a little more of everyday life in Nadi, spend some time wandering around Nadi Town.

The town is relatively small but lively, with open-air markets, souvenir shops, local cafés and restaurants. It's a good place to pick up souvenirs and browse stalls selling tropical fruit, handmade crafts and traditional sulus, which are the colourful Fijian sarongs you'll see people wearing.

It's also a great place to try some Indian-Fijian food. Grab a plate of curry, roti and dhal at a local restaurant or look for fresh seafood and other local dishes.

I always think visiting the local markets is worthwhile when travelling, and Nadi is no exception. It gives you a very different experience from spending all your time at the resort areas.

Relax at Wailoaloa Beach

Wailoaloa Beach is one of the easiest beaches to visit from Nadi and is only a short drive from the town. It's a long, wide stretch of sand and is particularly nice around sunset.

While I wouldn't come to Wailoaloa expecting the turquoise water and powder-white sand you see in photos of Fiji's outer islands, it's still a great place to spend a relaxed afternoon.

There are several beachfront bars where you can grab a drink and watch the sunset, and the area has plenty of budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses that gives Wailoaloa a more social atmosphere than some of Fiji's luxury resort areas.

If you're backpacking Fiji or travelling on a tighter budget, this is one of the areas I'd look at first when choosing where to stay in Nadi.

Wander through the Garden of the Sleeping Giant

If you need a break from beaches and sightseeing, head to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. The garden was originally started by actor Raymond Burr, best known for playing Perry Mason, and today it contains hundreds of varieties of orchids and other tropical plants.

It's a beautiful and peaceful place to wander, particularly if you enjoy gardens and photography. The combination of orchids, lush greenery, tropical plants and lily ponds makes it feel very different from the busier parts of Nadi.

Don't just stop at the first gardens, either. Walk further into the property and you'll find a short jungle walk that leads towards a lily pond. There is also a hill further into the garden where you can get a beautiful scenic view over the surrounding area.

Take a mud bath at the Sabeto Hot Springs & Mud Pool

For something a little different, head to the Sabeto Hot Springs & Mud Pool. The experience starts by covering yourself in warm, mineral-rich mud before letting it dry on your skin. You then wash it off in a series of naturally heated pools. It's part spa treatment and part pure fun, which is exactly why I enjoyed it.

When I visited, I had the place almost to myself, which was pretty special considering it's such a fun and popular attraction. They also offer massages that you can book when you arrive. I didn't have time to try one myself, but it would make a great addition if you want to turn the visit into more of a spa experience.

The hot springs are also close to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, so these two attractions work really well together on the same day.

Take a day trip to the Mamanuca Islands

If you only have time for one big day trip from Nadi, I'd make it an island trip.

The Mamanuca Islands are exactly what most people picture when they think of Fiji, turquoise water, sandy beaches, coral reefs and tiny tropical islands scattered across the Pacific.

There are plenty of ways to experience them. You can take a catamaran cruise, go snorkelling or diving, relax on the beach or spend the day on a smaller sandbar surrounded by clear water. Some of the popular islands and resorts you can visit include South Sea Island, Castaway Island and Malolo.

A day trip is also a good option if you're travelling Fiji on a budget. Instead of paying for several nights of accommodation on the islands, you can stay in Nadi and visit the Mamanucas as a day trip.

Experience a traditional Fijian cultural village

If you want to understand more about Fiji beyond its beaches and resorts, add a cultural experience to your itinerary. There are several cultural experiences around Nadi where visitors can learn more about traditional Fijian customs and history. Depending on the experience, this can include traditional ceremonies, meke performances and kava tasting.

I think this is particularly worthwhile if you're visiting Fiji for the first time. The beaches may be what initially attracts you, but learning about the culture gives you a much better understanding of the country you're travelling through.

Go ziplining through the jungle

If lying on a beach isn't enough adventure for you, you can also go ziplining in the Sabeto Valley. The experience takes you over lush rainforest, creeks and waterfalls, giving you a completely different perspective of the landscape around Nadi.

The Sabeto Valley is also home to several other attractions, so you can combine ziplining with the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and Sabeto Hot Springs if you want to make a full day of exploring this part of the area.

Spend an evening on Denarau Island

Denarau Island is one of the main resort areas near Nadi and is very different from Nadi Town. This is where you'll find large resorts, restaurants, the marina and many of the operators running trips out to Fiji's islands.

Even if you're not staying at one of the resorts, it's worth coming here for dinner or sunset drinks. The waterfront is a nice place to spend an evening, especially after a day exploring.

Denarau is also important if you're planning to visit other islands. Many boats and ferries depart from the marina, and there are also day trips to smaller islands.

If you're staying on another island after Nadi, make sure you organize your transfer in advance rather than simply turning up at the marina and hoping there will be space.

Best Places to Stay in Nadi

Wailoaloa Beach is the area I'd look at if you want to be near the beach without paying Denarau prices. It's relaxed, social and has a good selection of restaurants, bars, hostels and mid-range hotels.

Denarau Island is where you'll find Fiji's big international resorts, swimming pools, spas, golf and Port Denarau, where many island trips depart. It's more expensive and much more resort-focused, but it's incredibly convenient if your idea of a Fiji holiday involves spending a lot of time at the resort.

Nadi Airport and Namaka are the practical choices. If you're arriving late, leaving early or only have one night in Nadi, staying here means you don't have to spend your first or last day sitting in traffic getting to the airport.

This is a great option if you want a proper resort experience without staying all the way out on Denarau Island. The recently revamped resort has seven swimming pools, including pool-access rooms, a spa, fitness centre and a huge choice of dining and cafés.

How Many Days do You Need in Nadi?

I'd recommend spending 2–3 days in Nadi if you're visiting Fiji for the first time.

With two days, you can explore the main attractions around Nadi, including the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, Garden of the Sleeping Giant, Sabeto Hot Springs and Wailoaloa Beach. With three days, I'd add a full-day trip to the Mamanuca Islands.

Of course, you can also use Nadi as a longer base if you're trying to keep your Fiji trip affordable. Staying on the mainland and taking several island day trips can work out considerably cheaper than staying at an island resort for your entire trip.

If you have more time and budget, though, I'd combine Nadi with a few nights on one of the smaller islands. That way you get the convenience and culture of the mainland as well as the classic Fiji island experience.

How to Best Explore Nadi?

Should you rent a car in Nadi?

If you're comfortable driving, I'd recommend renting a car. Having your own car makes it much easier to visit the different attractions around Nadi without having to coordinate taxis or tours. You can also decide how long you want to spend at each place and stop along the way whenever something catches your eye.

It's particularly useful if you want to combine attractions such as the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and Sabeto Hot Springs on the same day.

If you don't want to drive, there are also organised tours that combine several of Nadi's main attractions, which can be a convenient alternative.

Getting around by taxi in Nadi

Taxis are easy to find around Nadi, but make sure you agree on the price beforehand or check that the meter is running. For short trips around town, taxis can be convenient, particularly if you're travelling with several people and can split the cost.

Taking the bus in Nadi

Local buses are another option and are considerably cheaper than taxis. They can be slower and less convenient, but if you're travelling on a budget and aren't in a rush, they can be a good way to get around.

What is The Best Time to Visit Nadi

The dry season from May to October is generally the most popular time to visit Nadi, with sunnier weather and lower humidity. This is a particularly good period if you're planning lots of beach days and island trips. However I have to say that I visited in July and had quite a lot of rainfall, so be prepared for all kinds of weather no matter when you visit.

The wet season runs from November to April and tends to be hotter and more humid, with occasional tropical storms. That doesn't necessarily mean you should avoid visiting during the wet season. Fiji is tropical, and weather can change quickly, but you'll want to be a little more flexible with outdoor activities and island trips.

Nadi

What To Pack for Nadi

Nadi is a tropical destination, so lightweight clothing, swimwear, sunscreen and comfortable shoes are essentials.

I'd also bring something that covers your shoulders and knees if you plan to visit the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple or other cultural sites. A lightweight sarong is particularly useful because it takes up almost no space in your luggage.

Final thoughts: Is Nadi worth visiting?

Nadi isn't Fiji's most beautiful beach destination, and if you're expecting every beach to look like the photos you've seen of the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands, you might be a little disappointed.

But that's not really why I'd recommend visiting Nadi. Nadi is useful, convenient and surprisingly varied. Within a relatively small area you can visit a colorful Hindu temple, wander through an orchid garden, cover yourself in mud, soak in natural hot springs, explore local markets, relax on the beach and learn more about Fijian culture.

And then there's the biggest advantage: Nadi makes a great base for exploring the islands.

If you're travelling Fiji on a budget, staying on the mainland and taking a couple of day trips can also be a smart way to experience the famous islands without paying island-resort prices for your entire holiday.

For me, Nadi is worth more than just an airport stopover. Give yourself a few days, rent a car if you're comfortable driving, get out and explore the surrounding area, and then use Nadi as your jumping-off point for the islands.

Fiji has plenty of places where you can simply lie on a beach all day. Nadi gives you the opportunity to see a little more of the country before you head out into the islands.
