Choosing where to stay in Cinque Terre can completely shape your experience. Each of the five villages has its own personality—from romantic cliffside views in Manarola to beach days in Monterosso and quiet mornings in Corniglia. And while they’re all connected by trail and train, where you base yourself affects everything: how crowded it feels, how easy it is to get around, and what your mornings and evenings look like.

After exploring the various villages along the coast I first have to say that you can't really go wrong no matter where you choose to base yourself. When I was deciding for the first time I was so nervous that where I based myself would ruin my whole trip. Now I can honestly say that no matter where you base yourself you will have an amazing time in Cinque Terre. All the villages are truly stunning.

However, they do have some differences when it comes to how easy it is to get to and from them, how much it is to do in each village and how popular and crowded it is. So it all comes down to your personal style of travelling

Here I’ll break down the differences between the different villages, and which ones I think are the best to stay in for different preferences so you can choose the one that actually fits your travel style.

Quick Overview: Cinque Terre Villages

Cinque Terre is made up of five villages, all connected by train, hiking trails, and boats. As I said the various villages are similar, but with different vibes. Before I go into depth about all of them you can see a quick overview below.

How to Choose Your Base (What Actually Matters)

How to choose where you base yourself really comes down to what kind of trip you want and how long you decide to stay in Cinque Terre. Before we dive in, here’s what you should consider:

There’s no “one perfect village”—just the one that fits you best. Now, on to the different villages.

Cinque Terre

1. Manarola — Best for Views & Romantic Stays

If you’ve seen photos of Cinque Terre online, chances are they were taken either in Manarola or Riomaggiore.

This village is effortlessly beautiful—colorful houses stacked above the sea, dramatic cliffs, and some of the best sunset viewpoints in the region. It feels slightly more polished and calm than Riomaggiore, with a slower, more romantic atmosphere.

Mornings here are incredibly peaceful if you wake up early. Evenings are magical, but can be quite crowded with people gathering along the rocks and viewpoints to watch the sunset with a drink in hand.

2. Monterosso al Mare — Best for Beaches & Comfort

Monterosso is the largest and most accessible village—and the only one with a proper sandy beach.

It feels different from the others, more like a small Italian city than a hillside village. It’s less vertical, more spacious, and easier to navigate with luggage. If you want to mix exploring with actual relaxation, this is the best choice.

You’ll find more hotels, restaurants, and facilities here, which makes it a great base if you prefer a bit more comfort. If you're staying for a while I would choose to base myself here for some days and then in one of the other villages for a couple of days.

3. Vernazza — Most Iconic & Atmospheric

Vernazza

This village wraps around a small harbor, with a lively piazza right by the water. It feels like the heart of Cinque Terre, especially in the evenings when the crowds thin out and the atmosphere becomes softer and more intimate.

Staying here means stepping right into that postcard scene—especially if you have a harbour-view room.

4. Riomaggiore — Best for Lively Vibes & Value

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore is often the first village people visit—and it has a slightly more energetic feel than the others.

The main street runs straight through the village, lined with small restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s a great place to base yourself if you want something a bit more social and slightly more affordable. It’s also one of the villages with a decent spot to swim. It’s not a sandy beach like Monterosso, but it does the trick.

It has beautiful views and a charming harbour, but feels a bit less polished than Manarola or Vernazza—which, honestly, is part of its appeal.

5. Corniglia — Best Hidden Gem (Quiet & Local)

Corniglia

Corniglia is the village most people skip—and that’s exactly why it’s so special.

Perched high above the sea, it doesn’t have direct water access, which keeps the crowds away. What you get instead is a peaceful, local atmosphere and some of the best panoramic views in Cinque Terre.

Staying here feels more like living in a small Italian village than visiting a tourist destination.

If you don't plan on hiking a lot between the different villages I personally don't think this is the best place to base yourself. At least not on your first stay. If you decide to come back to Cinque Terre and want a more calm experience then this might be a good fit.

So… Which Village Should You Choose?

If you’re still unsure, here’s the honest breakdown:

Cinque Terre

My Personal Recommendation

No matter where you choose to base yourself, you'll have a good time. The only spot I would be hesitant to base myself on my first visit to Cinque Terre is Corniglia. It’s not because it's not beautiful, but because it's a bit harder to get around from there.

If it’s your first time in Cinque Terre, I’d choose Riomaggiore or Manarola if you want something special, and Monterosso if you want more comfort, less hiking and more food options.

If you have more than a couple of nights I would start with a few nights in Monterosso to ease into the area and then later on have a couple of nights in Riomaggiore which is my personal favourite village.

I hope this helps you plan your upcoming adventure to Cinque Terre and Italy. If you have any questions about travel in Italy, or just want to follow along as I travel the world full time, don‘t hesitate to reach out to me on social media. I would love to connect and help out!
