If you're planning a trip to Laos, chances are Luang Prabang is high on your itinerary and for good reason. This UNESCO World Heritage city is one of the most beautiful places in Southeast Asia and a place I personally fell in love with.

One of the questions I see asked time and time again is "Where should I stay in Luang Prabang?"

And I get it because even though the city is compact enough that you can walk almost everywhere, choosing the right area can make a big difference to your trip.

If it's your first visit, I'd recommend staying somewhere on the Old Town Peninsula. It's the heart of Luang Prabang and puts you within walking distance of the city's most famous temples, cafés, restaurants, markets and riverfront viewpoints.

If you're visiting as a couple or celebrating a special occasion, the Mekong Riverside offers some of the city's most romantic boutique hotels, while the countryside is perfect if you're looking for a quieter stay surrounded by lush gardens.

Understanding Luang Prabang

Before choosing where to stay, it's helpful to understand how the city is laid out.

The historic centre sits on a peninsula where the Mekong River meets the smaller Nam Khan River.

This peninsula is the heart of the Luang Prabang and is where you'll find many of the most famous landmarks, including the Royal Palace Museum, Mount Phousi, Wat Xieng Thong and the bustling Night Market.

To the west lies the Mekong River, known for amazing sunsets and riverside restaurants, while the eastern side follows the quieter Nam Khan River, where you’ll find more boutique hotels, cafés and a very peaceful atmosphere.

Beyond the historic centre, neighbourhoods such as Ban Mano and the surrounding countryside offer larger resorts, beautiful gardens and a slower pace of life, making them ideal for travellers looking to relax while still being close to the city's highlights.

Is Luang Prabang Walkable?

Absolutely, and that's one of the reasons I loved staying here.

Most visitors won't need to rent a scooter or rely on tuk-tuks during their stay. I found myself walking almost everywhere, whether it was heading to a café for breakfast, climbing Mount Phousi for views, browsing the Night Market or visiting one of the city's beautiful temples.

The walk from one end of the Old Town Peninsula to the other takes around 25 to 30 minutes, and along the way you'll constantly discover something new, whether it's a hidden bakery, a quiet monastery or a charming boutique shop.

For attractions further away, such as Kuang Si Falls or Pak Ou Caves, organised tours and shared minivans make getting around easy.

The Best Areas to Stay in Luang Prabang

One of the things I loved most about Luang Prabang is how compact and walkable it is. Unlike many cities in Southeast Asia, you don't need to spend hours in taxis or rent a scooter to get around.

Most of the main attractions, cafés, temples and restaurants are within a 20 to 30-minute walk of one another, making it incredibly easy to explore on foot.

That said, where you choose to stay can still shape your experience. Some areas put you in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old Town, while others offer peaceful riverside settings.

Do you want to step straight outside your hotel and be surrounded by centuries-old temples, bustling cafés and colourful markets? Or would you rather sip your morning coffee overlooking the Mekong River before wandering into town later in the day?

I've split this article first into the three main areas, Old Town, River side and countryside However, you will of course find more smaller areas within each of these, but I peronsally think this is more than enough to figure out where oil want to stay.

Later on you can find the best hotels based on what kind of traveller you are. Are you looking for the best boutique Hotel in Luang Prabang, are you splurging on a luxury resort in the jungle or are you looking for the best budget friendly place to stay in Luang Prabang? No matter what you need, you'll find it below.

Luang Prabang Old Town – Best for First-Time Visitors

If it's your first time visiting Luang Prabang, this is where I'd recommend staying. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is compact enough to explore on foot and puts you within minutes of the city's famous temples, the Royal Palace Museum, the Night Market, and dozens of cafés, bakeries, and restaurants.

While Sisavangvong Road is the lively heart of the city, the surrounding side streets are surprisingly peaceful, hiding beautiful boutique hotels inside traditional Lao houses and elegant French colonial buildings.

Staying here means you can experience the best of Luang Prabang from sunrise alms giving to evening strolls along the Mekong without ever needing a tuk-tuk.
