Doors-Off Flight Over Palau: How to Book & See the Rock Islands From Above

From the air, Palau looks almost unreal. You’ll see hundreds of tiny limestone islands covered in dense green jungle scattered across the impossibly blue and turquoise water. It’s a sight I’ll never forget!

And if you opt for the doors-off flight, you don't just get an incredible view, you also get a once in a lifetime experience with completely unobstructed views and some seriously unforgettable photo opportunities.

I spent quite a lot of time before my trip trying to figure out how to book a scenic flight in Palau, which company to use, what the flight is actually like and whether the doors-off option is worth it. So I decided to put everything I learned into this guide.

Here's everything you need to know about flying over Palau's Rock Islands, including what you can see, how to book a scenic flight, how much it costs, when to go and what the doors-off experience is really like.

Why Take a Scenic Flight Over Palau?

There are plenty of ways to explore Palau. You can go kayaking through the Rock Islands, snorkel in turquoise lagoons, dive some of the world's most famous reefs or visit places like the Milky Way Lagoon and Jellyfish Lake.

But no matter how many boat trips you take, you simply cannot appreciate the scale and shape of the Rock Islands of Palau until you see them from above.

From the ground, or more accurately, from the water, you only see the individual islands around you. From a small plane, you suddenly see the entire landscape at once. And then there are the lagoons and channels between them. From above, you can see just how many tiny islands, beaches and hidden bays make up this extraordinary part of Palau.

For me, the scenic flight was one of those experiences where you spend the entire flight thinking, “How is this even real”?

What Is a Doors-Off Scenic Flight in Palau Like?

This is what makes the experience particularly special. Some scenic flights in Palau use a small aircraft with the doors closed, but Pacific Mission Aviation also offer the option of flying with the door removed.

I highly recommend choosing this option if you're comfortable with it. I'll admit that when we first took off, I was a little nervous. Sitting in a tiny aircraft with an open doorway while flying over the Pacific Ocean is not exactly something you do every day! But once we were in the air, the nerves quickly disappeared.

You get completely unobstructed views of the Rock Islands. There is no window reflection getting in the way of your photographs and nothing separating you from the landscape below. You can look straight down at the islands, lagoons and reefs as the plane flies over them.

The wind is strong, so you'll definitely know you're flying with the door open, but that's also part of what makes the experience so memorable. It was easily one of the coolest experiences I had in Palau.

What Can You See From the Air?

Exactly what you see will depend on the route and conditions on the day, but a scenic flight over Palau can give you spectacular views of some of the country's most famous natural attractions.

The Rock Islands

Of course, the main attraction is the Rock Islands of Palau. From above, you really get to appreciate just how unusual their shapes are. Some look like mushrooms, some are tiny jungle-covered rocks and others are large enough to hide entire lagoons and beaches. The view is particularly spectacular when the sun is shining and the shallow water turns different shades of turquoise around the islands.

Milky Way Lagoon

The famous Milky Way Lagoon is another highlight. The lagoon is known for its pale, almost milky-looking water and the natural white limestone mud found on the bottom. People normally experience it from a boat, something I also recommend you do, but seeing the lagoon from above gives you an entirely different perspective. The bright water stands out dramatically against the surrounding green islands.

Jellyfish Lake

Depending on your flight route, you may also get a view of Jellyfish Lake, one of Palau's most famous attractions. The marine lake is surrounded by Rock Islands and is famous for its population of golden jellyfish. While you won't get the same experience as swimming among the jellyfish, seeing the lake from above gives you a great idea of just how isolated it is within the surrounding islands.

Long Beach

Long Beach is another spectacular sight from above. This beautiful sandbar stretches between islands and is particularly impressive when viewed from the air. The shape and visibility of the beach are affected by the tides, so what you see can look different depending on the time of your flight.

Blue Corner and German Channel

Palau is famous for its diving, and some of the world's most celebrated dive sites are scattered around these waters. Blue Corner and German Channel are particularly famous among divers, and from the air you can see the dramatic contrast between the shallow turquoise water and the deeper blue surrounding the reefs and channels. Even if you're not a diver, it's fascinating to see the underwater landscape from above.

How Do You Book a Scenic Flight in Palau?

The scenic flight I took was with Pacific Mission Aviation, which operates scenic flights from Palau International Airport. This was the company I personally picked, and I was very happy with the experience.

They offer scenic flights over Palau's islands and have different options depending on the aircraft and flight you choose. One of the biggest reasons I chose them was the possibility of doing the flight doors-off, which made a huge difference to the experience.

How Much Does a Scenic Flight Over Palau Cost?

When I did the flight, a 40-minute scenic flight cost around $270 per person when travelling as two people. The price per person can be lower if you're travelling with a larger group, with the aircraft accommodating up to five passengers.

There may also be an additional charge for the doors-off option, so make sure you confirm the current price and exactly what is included when booking.

Palau is not a cheap destination, and this isn't exactly a budget activity. But personally, I thought it was absolutely worth the money. If you're already spending the money to travel all the way to Palau, this is one experience I'd seriously consider adding to your itinerary.

Does Pacific Mission Aviation Offer Hotel Pick-Up?

Yes. When I booked my scenic flight, hotel pick-up and drop-off were included, which made the whole experience very easy. You'll want to confirm the current pick-up arrangements with the operator when booking, particularly if you're staying outside the main Koror area.

When Is the Best Time to Take a Scenic Flight in Palau?

The most important thing is really visibility and weather. Palau has a tropical climate and can experience rain throughout the year, so there isn't a completely guaranteed dry period. That said, the months from January to April are generally considered one of the better periods for drier weather.

Morning flights are often a good choice because you can have clearer skies and softer light for photography.

However, don't assume that visiting during the wetter months means your scenic flight will automatically be cancelled. Palau's weather can change quickly, and rain showers don't necessarily last all day.

I'd recommend booking your flight relatively early in your Palau itinerary if possible. That way, if the weather doesn't cooperate and the flight has to be rescheduled, you have some flexibility to move it to another day.

Is a Doors-Off Flight Safe?

It's completely understandable to wonder about this before booking. You're sitting in a very small aircraft with an open doorway, after all!

The most important thing is to follow the operator's instructions and listen to the pilot and crew. They will explain where you can sit, how to secure yourself and what you can do with cameras and other belongings.

If you're nervous about flying with the door open, you can always choose a flight with the doors closed instead. Personally, I was nervous for the first few minutes, but once we were in the air I felt much more comfortable. The excitement very quickly took over.

Is the Palau Scenic Flight Worth the Money?

I'm always a little hesitant to recommend expensive activities simply because something looks good in photographs. But this was one of those experiences that genuinely exceeded my expectations.

The Rock Islands are spectacular from the water, but seeing them from the sky completely changes your perspective. You can finally understand the scale of the landscape, see the hundreds of islands stretching across the lagoon and appreciate the incredible colours of the water. And flying with the door open made it even more memorable.

Yes, it is expensive. But if you have room in your Palau budget, I would absolutely recommend adding a scenic flight to your itinerary.
