Where to start this itinerary depends on where you are coming from. If you’re flying in to Brazil then you will most likely start in Rio or Sao Paolo. If you’re doing this as a part of a bigger South America trip like me then it’s better to take the bus in to Iguazu from Argentina. Just adjust it accordingly.
Day 1-4: Beaches and stunning views in Rio de Janeiro
There is no better way to start your trip than in Rio. The mix of mountains, beaches, and energy makes it one of the most exciting cities in the world. I have spent weeks here multiple times and never got bored, so if you have more time I would definitely add more here or add on a trip to Ihla Grande or Paratay. With 4 days you will absolutely be able to see the highlights, have time to relax on the beautiful beaches and check out some of the best hikes or viewpoints in the city.

A perfect week in Rio - your ultimate itinerary

How to travel from Rio to Sao Paulo
As mentioned Brazil is huge, so for some of this trip flying is essential. From Rio to Sao Paolo however is just a 6 hour bus ride so if you have the time and want to save some money, do this. This is what I have done and it’s very comfortable and easy. You can choose to do it during the day or as an overnight bus ride. Flying to Sao Paolo can also be pretty affordable if you book in advance.
Day 5-7: Museums and food in Sao Paulo
Sao Paolo is Brazils cultural and foodie capital. It’s a massive city so again you can easily spend more time here. However, if you are strict on time two days in Sao Paolo will definitely let you see the highlights, learn about the culture on a walking tour, relax in the parks and have some amazing food!

How to Travel from Sao Paulo to Florianopolis
It’s possible to do this trip with a bus too but it will take you 12 hours so I only recommend this option if you are on a tight budget. Otherwise catch a 1,5 hour flight and then an uber for the last 1 hour. Yes, I was also surprised by how far it was from the airport.
Day 8-11: Beachvibes and hikes in Florianopolis
Florianopolis (or Floripa) is an island paradise with over 40 beaches. It’s the perfect place to relax before heading inland to see the waterfalls. Other than the hike to Lagoinha do Leste there isn’t that much to do here other than soak up the sun and truly relax. So, prepare for some well deserved down time and take it easy.

How to Travel from Florianopolis to Iguazu Falls
Again, I highly recommend flying. If you fly it will take you around 1,5 to 2 hours, whereas the bus will be around 15 hours. But again, if you’re are on a budget and have more time to spend, then the buses in Brazil are pretty comfortable and not a bad choice at all.
Day 12-14: Walk the trails along Iguazu Falls
Ending the trip with one of the world’s most breathtaking waterfalls is the perfect way to wrap up this adventure. The falls sit on the border between Brazil and Argentina, and you can choose to see them from one or both sides. My honest opinion is that they are pretty good from both sides, so unless you are very interested or have more time than you need, you will probably be fine with just one of the sides. If that is the case you can also reduce the number of days here and add them somewhere else in this itinerary instead.

Iguazu Falls - Everything You Need to Know About the Brazilian Side

How to Travel Back from Iguazu Falls?
There are many options to choose from here. If you’re doing this as part of a bigger tour of South America you can easily take the bus over to Argentina from here. Otherwise book your flight home with a stopover in either Rio or Sao Paolo.
Final Thoughts
This itinerary gives you a perfect mix of iconic cities, beaches, and natural wonders. There’s so much more to explore in Brazil, but as you can see even when things are pretty close it takes time to travel between each destination. You can also alter this itinerary as you see fit, maybe start in Sao Paolo and end in Rio instead depending on how you want to spend your last days on vacation.
Hope this helps you plan your trip!
Until next time,
Ingrid
