There are few places in the world that leave a lasting impression quite like Iguazu Falls. Stretching across the border between Brazil and Argentina, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of South America's most spectacular natural wonders. While many visitors only spend a day here, I highly recommend staying at least two or three nights to fully experience everything the region has to offer.

If you're wondering where to stay in Iguazu Falls, the answer depends on your travel style.

Do you want to wake up just minutes from the waterfalls and see it before the park even opens?

Stay in a luxury resort surrounded by rainforest?

Or would you rather base yourself in the city center with plenty of restaurants and affordable hotels?

In this guide, I'll cover the best areas to stay in Foz do Iguaçu on the Brazilian side, along with my favorite hotels for every budget.

Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay?

If you don't have time to read the whole guide, here's a quick overview of the best hotels.

Best Areas to Stay in Iguazu Falls

Unlike many destinations, Foz do Iguaçu only has a few areas that actually make sense for tourists.

The vast majority of visitors choose between staying close to the national park along Avenida das Cataratas or in the city center.

Avenida das Cataratas is the closest area to Iguaçu National Park and is lined with resorts and upscale hotels, while downtown Foz offers the largest selection of restaurants, shops, and more affordable accommodation. So it really depends on you budget and travel style

Avenida das Cataratas – Best Overall Area

If I were visiting Iguazu Falls for the first time and came just for the nature, this is exactly where I'd stay.

Running from downtown Foz do Iguaçu to the entrance of Iguaçu National Park, Avenida das Cataratas is the city's main tourist corridor.

Many of the best hotels are located here, making it easy to reach both the waterfalls and attractions like Parque das Aves (Bird Park) and the airport.

It's an especially great choice if you simply want a peaceful setting surrounded by tropical greenery rather than staying in the middle of the city.

Foz do Iguaçu City Center – Best for Budget Travelers and City Life

If you're traveling on a budget or prefer having restaurants, cafés, supermarkets, and nightlife within walking distance, downtown Foz do Iguaçu is an excellent option.

Accommodation here is significantly cheaper than near the falls, and you'll find everything from hostels to comfortable hotels at very reasonable prices.

Public buses and taxis make it easy to visit both the Brazilian and Argentine sides of Iguazu Falls, while the city also offers easy access to Paraguay for a day trip.

It has to be said that the city in itself isn’t particularly interesting, and there isn’t so much to do here, but you’ll still find some great hotels and restaurants.

If you decide to stay in the city I highly recommend getting a hotel with a pool to cool of in after exploring.

Where Not to Stay in Iguazu

Unlike many large cities in Brazil, Foz do Iguaçu is generally considered one of the safer tourist destinations, especially in the areas most visitors stay.

That said, there are still a few things worth keeping in mind when choosing your accommodation.

If your main reason for visiting is Iguazu Falls, I wouldn't recommend staying too far from either Avenida das Cataratas or the city center.

Some hotels on the outskirts of Foz may be cheaper, but you'll spend considerably more time and money on taxis or transfers each day.

If you don't have your own car, it's also worth checking whether your hotel is within walking distance of restaurants.

Many resorts along Avenida das Cataratas are surrounded by rainforest, meaning there are very few dining options nearby besides the hotel itself.

Finally, while crossing into Paraguay or Argentina is easy for a day trip, I wouldn't choose accommodation there if your primary goal is exploring the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls.

Staying in Brazil keeps transportation simple and allows you to reach the national park early in the morning.

Should You Stay on the Brazilian or Argentine Side of Iguazu Falls?

This is one of the most common things to consider before visiting the Iguazu falls.

If possible, I recommend spending at least one full day on each side of the falls. They offer completely different perspectives and if you've come all this way it's fun to see as much of the falls as possible.

Stay in Brazil if you want:

Stay in Argentina if you want:

For most international visitors, however, Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil is the more practical base, especially if you're only visiting for two or three nights.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Iguazu?

It's theoretically possible to fly into Iguazu, visit the falls, and fly somewhere else in one day. I've heard of people doing that, but I personally don't recommend it. Unless you're super stretched for time.

If you stay for 2 nights you'll have time to explore both the Brazilian and Argentinian side as well as relax or see some of the other sights in the area.

If you have more time you can easily spend 3 nights here, especially if you've had some longer travel days to get here.

If you do that you can see both sides without rushing and also take a boat trip or add on some other activities in the area.

Is It Worth Staying Inside Iguazu National Park?

If your budget allows, absolutely.

I haven't done it personally, but I really wish I had the budget for it on my last visit.

The falls are incredibly beautiful, but no matter when you come there will be crowds.

And a spot like this is of course best experienced without the huge crowds.

So if you have the budget for it, I would absolutely do it!

Belmond Hotel das Cataratas offers an experience that's impossible to replicate elsewhere. Being able to walk to the waterfalls before the park opens and after the crowds have left is something very few visitors ever experience.

That said, it's also one of the most expensive hotels in Brazil.

So if it's outside your budget, don't worry. Hotels like Sanma Hotel and Vivaz Cataratas Resort are only a few minutes away and offer excellent value while still providing quick access to the park.

Tips for Choosing the Right Hotel in Iguazu

Before booking, here are a few things to consider:

Book early

The best hotels, especially those near the national park, often sell out months in advance during Brazilian holidays and the summer season.

Include breakfast

Most hotels in Foz do Iguaçu serve generous Brazilian breakfast buffets, making it easy to start your day before heading to the falls.

Consider transportation

If you don't plan on renting a car, check whether your hotel offers airport transfers or is close to bus stops.

Stay close to the attractions

Even though Foz do Iguaçu isn't huge, staying near Avenida das Cataratas can save you valuable sightseeing time.
