What makes Curaçao special is that it offers much more than just beaches. Yes, the island has some of the most stunning turquoise coves in the region, but it also has colorful colonial architecture, fantastic restaurants, lively beach clubs, and rugged landscapes filled with cactus and dramatic cliffs.

In this ultimate travel guide to Curaçao, I’ll share the best things to do, where to stay, the most beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and helpful travel tips so you can plan the perfect trip.

Best Things to Do in Curaçao

As always I’ll start with the fun stuff first, namely how to spend your time in Curaçao. If you also need more practical information like how to get around, where to stay, the best restaurants and bars, and everything else you should know before planning your trip, just scroll further down and you'll find everything you need.

Explore the Colourful Streets of Willemstad

The capital city of Willemstad is easily one of the most charming places in the Caribbean. The first thing you’ll notice is the row of brightly painted Dutch colonial buildings along the waterfront. It almost looks like something out of a storybook, and it’s one of the most photographed places on the island.

Spend a few hours wandering the narrow streets, browsing small boutiques, and stopping at cafés along the waterfront. There are also plenty of museums, art galleries, and street murals to discover as you explore the city.

Visit the Stunning Beaches on the West Coast

Some of the most beautiful beaches in Curaçao are located along the island’s western coast.

One of the most famous beaches is Grote Knip, often considered the most beautiful beach on the island. From the viewpoint above the beach you’ll get an incredible panoramic view of bright blue water framed by rocky cliffs. It’s the kind of place where you’ll immediately want to jump in the water. The nearby Kleine Knip is in my opinion equally beautiful, just a bit smaller and less crowded.

Another fantastic beach is Cas Abao Beach, which has soft white sand, crystal-clear water, and great snorkelling just offshore. Here you'll find more beach bars and loungers so it's easy to spend the whole day here.

You can pick a beach and relax for the day or go beach hopping and look for your favorite. I can guarantee that you'll find a spot you'll love.

Take a Day Trip to Klein Curaçao

One of the most unforgettable experiences on the island is visiting Klein Curaçao, a small uninhabited island about two hours away by boat. This tiny island is famous for its powdery white sand and incredibly clear water.

We visited Klein Curaçao on an organized boat tour that included snorkelling gear, food, and drinks. Once you arrive, the entire day is yours to relax on the beach, swim in the warm Caribbean Sea, or explore the island. I chose to just relax, but many others had fun spotting fish while snorkeling or take a walk to the historic lighthouse nearby. On the way to the island we were lucky enough to spot lots of dolphins swimming past us, which was such an amazing moment.

Since it's two hours away you need to dedicate a full day to get here. The day trip is a bit on the pricy side, but my honest opinion is that the experience was worth every penny and I would definitely do it again.

Snorkel at Playa Lagun

Curaçao is known for its fantastic snorkeling, and Playa Lagun is one of the best spots to experience it. This small cove is surrounded by steep cliffs, which creates calm water and excellent visibility.

As soon as you enter the water, you’ll likely see schools of colorful fish swimming around the rocks and coral. Sea turtles are also often spotted here, especially if you swim a little further along the edges of the bay. I didn't personally snorkel, but saw so many people with snorkel gear having fun here.

The beach itself is small but very scenic, and there’s a cozy restaurant overlooking the water where you can grab lunch after your swim.

If you want to snorkel with turtles and relax on the beach afterwards, this is the tour for you.

Avoid the hassle of dealing with scuba tanks or snorkel gear and easily breathe underwater with a bell-shaped helmet that receives oxygen. Sit atop your scooter that works on jet propulsion and observe several marine species.

Hike in Christoffel National Park

For adventurous travelers, climbing Mount Christoffel is a great option to add to your itinerary. The temperature was too hot for me to decide going hiking so I don't have any personal experiences to share about this hike, but I'm adding it here in case you visit during a less hot period or if you want to get up at the crack of dawn to do some hiking.

The hike usually takes about an hour, but the terrain is said to be rocky and steep in places so bring good shoes. Along the trails you're supposed to be able to see local wildlife like iguanas, rare birds, and even white-tailed deer. At the top you'll be rewarded with some incredible views of Curaçao.

You don't need to hike to the top to enjoy the national park. You can also drive there yourself and wander around or join a guided tour where you look for animals and learn more about the islands history at the same time.

Visit Shete Boka National Park

On the rugged north coast of Curaçao, you’ll find the dramatic landscapes of Shete Boka National Park. This park is famous for its powerful waves crashing into rocky inlets and sea caves. Walking trails lead you to several “boka” (meaning inlets), each with its own unique views and formations. One of the most popular stops is Boka Pistol, where waves shoot into the air like a natural geyser when they hit the rocks. The scenery here is completely different from the calm beaches on the west coast, making it a great place to see another side of the island. Bring comfortable shoes and some water, as you’ll likely spend a couple of hours exploring the park.

Visit the Curaçao Liqueur Distillery

The famous bright-blue Blue Curaçao liqueur actually originates from the island itself. You can learn all about it at the historic Landhuis Chobolobo, where the liqueur is still produced today. During the tour you’ll learn how the drink is made using the dried peel of the local laraha citrus fruit, which is unique to Curaçao. The tour also takes you through the historic plantation house and explains the history of the distillery. At the end, you’ll get the chance to taste several different flavors of the liqueur. It’s a fun and informative stop, especially if you enjoy local food and drinks.

Discover Street Art in Otrobanda

While Willemstad is famous for its colourful colonial buildings, the neighborhood of Otrobanda has become known for its vibrant street art scene. Walking through the narrow streets here feels like exploring an open-air art gallery. Large murals cover many of the buildings, showcasing stories about the island’s culture, history, and local life. It’s a great place to wander with a camera and discover hidden corners of the city. Along the way you’ll also find small cafés, galleries, and local shops.

Relax at Mambo Beach

If you’re looking for a lively beach atmosphere, head to Mambo Beach. This popular beach area combines soft sand and clear water with restaurants, beach clubs, and shops. During the day you can rent a sunbed, swim in the calm water, or enjoy lunch at one of the beachfront restaurants. In the afternoon the vibe becomes more social as music starts playing and people gather for drinks by the sea. In the evening many of the bars stay open late, making this one of the best places on the island for nightlife. It’s a great spot if you want a beach day that transitions into a fun evening out.

This is one of the most popular beaches for cruise tourists so make sure to check cruise schedules before you arrive and go to Mambo Becah on a day where there are no or at least few cruise ships in port for a more relaxed visit.

Take a Sunset Cruise

One of the most relaxing ways to end a day in Curaçao is by taking a sunset cruise along the coast. Several companies offer catamaran trips in the late afternoon that include drinks, snacks, and music on board. Many cruises depart from Willemstad, making it easy to combine with dinner in the city afterward. It’s a perfect activity for couples or anyone looking for a memorable evening.

Willemstad

If you want to stay somewhere lively with restaurants, nightlife, and historic architecture, Willemstad is a fantastic choice.

Best Restaurants in Curaçao

Curaçao has an exciting food scene that mixes Caribbean flavors with Dutch and international influences. In Willemstad, waterfront restaurants serve everything from fresh seafood to gourmet dishes with beautiful views of the harbor.

Local favorites include Plasa Bieu, where you can try authentic Curaçao dishes like stewed goat and fresh fish prepared the traditional way. For something more upscale, Fort Nassau offers incredible views along with creative Caribbean cuisine. Some other favourites of mine that offer up more international food are Maira's Kitchen, La Bohème, Mi Familia and The Wine Cellar.

How to Get Around Curaçao

The easiest way to explore Curaçao is by renting a car. Many of the island’s most beautiful beaches are spread out along the coast, and having your own vehicle makes it much easier to reach them.

Driving is simple and the roads are generally in good condition. Taxis are available but can become expensive if you plan to explore different parts of the island. There are also buses that can take you from Willemstad to the most popular beaches, but if you want to explore more of the remote beaches you need to rent a car or do a guided tour.

Best Time to Visit Curaçao

One of the great things about Curaçao is that it has warm weather all year round. Temperatures usually stay between 27–30°C (80–86°F), making it a great destination in almost any season.

The island is also located outside the main hurricane belt, which means it’s often a safer choice for Caribbean travel during hurricane season. The most popular months to visit are between December and April when the weather is slightly cooler and drier. I visited in July and thought the weather and temperature was perfect.

How Long to Stay in Curaçao

To really experience the island, I recommend spending at least five days in Curaçao. This gives you enough time to explore Willemstad, visit several beaches, go snorkelling, and take a day trip to Klein Curaçao. This way you can also combine it with a trip to the other ABC-Islands Aruba and Bonaire if you have more time. Use my 5 Day itinerary to Curaçao to plan your trip in more detail.

There’s something special about Curaçao that makes it stand out from many other Caribbean islands. The combination of colorful cities, hidden beaches, great food, and laid-back island life creates a destination that feels both exciting and relaxing at the same time.
