Battambang is not a huge city, so choosing where to stay is not as complicated as it can be in places like Phnom Pehn or Siem Reap. However, there are various areas to consider as well as what kind of experience you want. You can choose to stay in the city centre, close to the river or have a very different experience and stay little further out in Wat Kor Village and the surrounding countryside.

For most first-time visitors, staying in central Battambang is the easiest option. You'll be close to the markets, restaurants, cafés, colonial buildings and the riverside, and you can easily get a tuk-tuk to the attractions outside the city. However, if you're looking for somewhere quieter with a pool, gardens and more of a retreat feeling, staying in Wat Kor can be a much better choice.

I personally think Battambang is a place where your hotel can be part of the experience. There are some lovely boutique properties here, including restored colonial buildings and traditional Khmer-style accommodation, and they are often surprisingly affordable compared with similar hotels in other parts of Asia.

Quick Answer: Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Battambang?

The best area to stay in Battambang depends on what kind of trip you're planning.

Battambang city centre and the riverside are best if you want to be within walking distance of restaurants, markets, cafés and the main sights in town. This is the area I would recommend for most first-time visitors, particularly if you're only staying for one or two nights.

Wat Kor Village is a better choice if you want somewhere peaceful and surrounded by greenery. It's just outside the centre, so you'll need a tuk-tuk to get around, but you'll get a much more relaxed atmosphere and some beautiful boutique hotels.

There are also a few hotels further out of the centre that feel more like resorts. These are particularly good if you have your own transport or don't mind arranging tuk-tuks whenever you want to go into town.

Below you’ll see my three favourite hotels that I recommend checking out first. This is my personal favourite, and I highly recommend staying there if you want a relaxing, but fun stay in Battambang.

Below you'll find a map where I've pinned my favourite hotels in Battambang to make it easier for you to navigate when you're looking for where you want to base yourself.

Battambang City - Best for a Short and Practical Stay

For most first-time visitors, Battambang city centre and the riverside are the best areas to stay. This is where you'll find the heart of the city, with the Sangker River running through it, old French-colonial buildings, local markets, cafés, restaurants and plenty of small shops. It’s also the area where you'll get the best feel for everyday life in Battambang, particularly around the central market and the streets surrounding the river.

Staying here means you can easily explore quite a bit of Battambang on foot. Start your morning with breakfast at a café, walk through Phsar Nath Market, explore the old streets and colonial architecture, and then wander along the riverside without having to organise a tuk-tuk every time you want to go somewhere. The city centre is also where you'll find most of the restaurants and bars, which is particularly convenient in the evening when you want to go out for dinner or have a drink without travelling across town.

One thing to keep in mind is that not all of Battambang's best things to do are within walking distance. Phnom Sampeau, the Killing Caves, the Bamboo Train and the bat cave are all outside the centre, so you'll still need a tuk-tuk or driver for some of your sightseeing.

The centre also has a good mix of accommodation. You can find simple guesthouses and budget hotels if you're travelling on a backpacker budget, but there are also some really lovely boutique hotels with swimming pools, gardens and historic architecture.

If you are only spending one or two nights in Battambang, I would definitely choose the city centre or riverside. It makes the most sense logistically and means you can make the most of your limited time without spending too much of it getting around. If you're staying longer and would rather have a quieter, more resort-like experience, I'd look at Wat Kor Village instead.

This hotel occupies a restored French-colonial villa near the river, and the architecture gives it considerably more character than a modern hotel. The property has a swimming pool and garden, so although you're staying close to the centre, it still feels like a peaceful retreat.

Wat Kor Village - Best for a Peaceful Countryside Stay

If you want your stay in Battambang to feel a little more peaceful and surrounded by nature, Wat Kor Village is one of the best areas to consider.

Located just south of the city centre, Wat Kor is a traditional village known for its old wooden Khmer houses, tropical gardens and quieter atmosphere. It feels much more rural than central Battambang, even though you're only a short tuk-tuk ride away from the city.

This is the area I would choose if you don't particularly care about being able to walk out of your hotel and immediately find restaurants and cafés. Instead, the appeal is being able to slow down. Many of the hotels here are built around gardens and swimming pools, and some have traditional Khmer architecture, so staying in Wat Kor can feel more like staying in a countryside retreat than staying in a city hotel.

The area is also a good choice if you want to experience a different side of Battambang. Wat Kor is home to traditional wooden houses, small roads and farmland, and simply driving or cycling around the area can be an enjoyable part of your visit. It feels much less developed than the city centre, which is exactly why I would consider staying here if you have more than one night in Battambang.

The main downside is that you won't have the same walkability as you do in the centre. Most of Battambang's restaurants, markets and bars are a tuk-tuk ride away, and you'll also need transportation for the main attractions outside the city. This isn't a huge problem, though, as tuk-tuks are easy to arrange and most hotels can help organise transportation and day trips.

Wat Kor makes the most sense if you're staying two or more nights and want somewhere you can actually enjoy spending time at your hotel. If you're only in Battambang for one night and want to see as much as possible, I'd stay in the centre instead. But if you're looking for a beautiful pool, lush gardens and a slower atmosphere, Wat Kor is a much more interesting choice.

Best Budget Hotels in Battambang

One of the nice things about Battambang is that you don't need to spend a lot of money to find somewhere comfortable. There are plenty of inexpensive guesthouses and hotels around the centre, and several have pools, gardens or surprisingly nice rooms for the price.

If you're travelling on a backpacker budget, Blue Diamond Hostel is one of the better-known options. It has an outdoor pool, restaurant and bar, and is particularly popular with travellers looking for a social and affordable place to stay.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Battambang?

I recommend staying at least two nights in Battambang. This gives you one full day to explore the city and another to visit some of the attractions outside town, such as Phnom Sampeau, the Killing Caves and the countryside.

If you enjoy slow travel, you could easily stay three or four nights. Battambang isn't somewhere I would visit simply to tick off a list of attractions. Part of the appeal is wandering through the old streets, stopping at cafés, exploring the markets and seeing what everyday life looks like away from Cambodia's biggest tourist destinations.

And because accommodation is generally good value, staying an extra night doesn't have to add much to your travel budget.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Battambang

Battambang is one of those Cambodian destinations where I would choose my accommodation based on the kind of experience I wanted rather than simply looking for the hotel with the best location. The centre is definitely the easiest option, especially if you're only staying for a night or two, but the hotels around Wat Kor offer something completely different.

If you want to walk out of your hotel and immediately be surrounded by restaurants, markets and the old town, stay in the centre. If you would rather wake up surrounded by greenery, swim in a pool and have somewhere peaceful to come back to after exploring, I'd seriously consider Wat Kor.

For me, Maisons Wat Kor stands out as one of the most interesting places to stay in Battambang, while Muni Residence is a great all-rounder if you want to stay centrally. Either way, Battambang has some surprisingly good accommodation for a city that still sees far fewer international visitors than Siem Reap, and that is part of what makes staying here such a nice experience.
