Santorini is one of those islands where the area you stay completely shapes your experience. I’ve learned that Santorini can either feel pretty crowded or extremely peaceful, and it mostly depends on choosing the right base as well as how to spend your time there.
Quick Overview: Which Area Should You Stay In?
Before reading more about each area, here’s a quick feel for each of them:
- Oia – Most iconic, romantic, luxury-heavy, sunset views
- Imerovigli – Caldera views, quieter, upscale but peaceful
- Fira – Central, lively, good mix of budgets and nightlife
- Pyrgos – Authentic, local, charming village vibes
- Kamari & Perissa – Beach towns, more affordable, relaxed
Now let’s break it down properly.

Oia – For Iconic Postcard Views
Oia is Santorini’s most famous village and the place you'll find on every postcard. Imagine white cave hotels carved into cliffs, infinity pools spilling into the caldera and private terraces where you can watch the sunset without fighting the crowds. It’s undeniably magical — but it’s also the most expensive area on the island.
This is where I based myself on my first visit and I stayed at the White Pearl Laokasto Hotel. It was the perfect pick for me, just of the mains street of Oia with a decent price for a stunning hotel.

Best Luxury Stays in Oia
This is peak Santorini luxury. Think private plunge pools, minimal white interiors, champagne breakfasts overlooking the caldera. If you’re celebrating something special, this is the kind of place you’ll remember forever.

Elegant, layered infinity pools cascading down the cliffside. It’s refined, romantic, and exactly what you imagine when you picture “luxury Santorini.” It's another perfect spot for a honeymoon.

Just a short stroll from the main village but with the same mesmerizing views, this hotel balances understated elegance with personalized service. Expect modern interiors, breakfasts on your private terrace, and sunsets that feel like they were choreographed just for you.

Best Mid-Range Stays in Oia
Elegant Cycladic style meets modern comfort here. Spacious rooms and thoughtful details make this an excellent mid-range choice for couples or small groups.

A lovely option just minutes from the famed Oia Castle sunset point. Rooms are sleek and bright with some offering caldera views — great if you want the classic Santorini feel without ultra-luxury prices.

One of the more affordable places to stay in Oia without giving up location. Rooms aren’t cliff-hanging, but the vibe is authentic and you’re still a short walk from the sunset views and village lanes.

Best Budget Stays in Oia
A popular and charming cave-style stay with incredible caldera views at a more manageable price for those looking to stay in Oia without breaking the beank.

Perfect for backpackers or travellers who want to be in the heart of Oia without the usual price tag. It’s basic, clean, and in a great spot for exploring on foot with bus stops right outside.

Imerovigli - Quiet Luxury
Often called “the Balcony of the Aegean,” Imerovigli sits between Fira and Oia with arguably some of the best caldera views on the island — but without Oia’s crowds. It’s ideal if you want romance and serenity. This area doesn't have any day trippers so you will definitely find it more peaceful than most of the other villages.
If I could choose where to stay again purely for balance, I might pick Imerovigli.

Best Luxury Stays in Imerovigli
A newer luxury Hotel with modern cave-style interiors and private balconies that frame that iconic Santorini light. Rooms here mix classic Cycladic design with contemporary comfort.

Modern design, dramatic infinity pool, exceptional service. It’s one of the most photographed hotels on the island for a reason.

Best Mid-Range Stays in Imerovigli
Cliffside elegance with sweeping caldera views and beautiful infinity pools. It feels intimate and luxurious without being flashy. It's perfect if you want your Santorini experience to feel like a retreat.

A calm mid-range choice with bright, modern rooms, many with caldera views. It’s close to local cafés and cliffside walking paths, and feels restful at the end of a big day exploring.

Best Budget Friendly Stays in Imerovigli
Comfortable rooms and a relaxed atmosphere make this an excellent pick for couples who want views without paying top-tier luxury prices — plus it’s often easier to find availability here.

A guesthouse-style stay with simple, clean rooms and great access to the village heart. Not as glossy as the luxury spots, but authentic and much friendlier to a tighter budget.

Fira – Central & Lively
Fira is the island’s capital and therefore easiest to reach. It's full of shops, nightlife and restaurants. It’s a great home base if you want to explore Santorini without staying right on the caldera.
In my opinion it's not as romantic and charming as Oia or any of the other villages, but it’s convenient and has the biggest variety of accommodations.
If you want energy, nightlife and easy transport access, this is where you should base yourself.

Best Luxury Stays in Fira
This Hotel offers amazing cliffside views, private hot tubs as well as a sentral location. It's the perfect blend of comfort and convenience.

An adult-only stay with a modern twist and incredible panoramic views. Sunsets here feel like a private concert — plus you’re steps from Fira’s best dining and nightlife.

This Hotel offers bright rooms and a great location. This is the perfect spot for those who want central access without climbing too many stairs.

Best Mid-range Stays in Fira
This is a cozy and friendly property with simple comforts and easy access to buses, restaurants, and the caldera’s sweep of views.

This Hotel offers spacious rooms with great caldera views. It's also more affordable than Oia luxury options.

Best Budget Stays in Fira
This is classic Greek island luxury with plush rooms, a great spa option, and excellent service — ideal if you want a little indulgence without Oia price tags.

This boutique Hotel is aesthetic with tasteful décor, and balconies that catch the sunlight. It's walking distance to town but still peaceful.

Pyrgos – Authentic & Underrated
If you want a quieter, more local side of Santorini, villages like Pyrgos offer great views, great tavernas, and more wallet-friendly accommodation.
Small boutique guesthouses here offer incredible value compared to caldera towns. You won’t always get direct cliff views — but you’ll get charm.

Secluded villas with private plunge pools and panoramic island views — a gorgeous base if you value calm evenings away from the crowds.

Charming Cycladic décor and serene common areas make this a lovely stay for couples or families who want authentic village life with style.

A traditional stone mansion turned boutique lodge — it feels like staying in history, without the steep caldera price tag.

Affordable, elegant, and perfect for travelers who want quiet and simplicity with plenty of Santorini character.

Kamari & Perissa – Beach Vibes & Budget Friendly
If you want beach days, sunbeds, and relaxed tavernas instead of caldera cliffs, head to Kamari or Perissa. These black-sand beach towns are much more affordable and feel like a traditional Greek summer destination.
You’ll find plenty of family-run studios and small hotels here for very reasonable prices — especially outside peak season.

This is an elegant and relaxed beachfront Hotel. It has a great balance of style and comfort and is perfect if you just want to relax.

Stylish yet relaxed rooms with pools and short walks to the black sand beach.

Modern rooms, spa services, and beach proximity make this a terrific splurge (but often less than caldera luxury).

Simple, friendly rooms a stone’s throw from the beach. It’s straightforward accommodation, but hard to beat for the price and location.

Comfortable units with kitchenettes and easy beach access — ideal for longer stays or families.

Tips for Choosing the Right Spot in Santorini
- Book early. Santorini fills up fast, especially cliffside hotels with caldera views.
- Think about your priorities: Do you want sunset views, beach access, or local village charm? Each area delivers something different.
- Balance splurges with simple stays. A few nights in a caldera suite paired with more relaxed nights inland or by the beach can stretch your budget and elevate your experience.

Conclusion: How to Choose the Right Area for You
Stay in Oia if you want iconic views and romance.
Stay in Imerovigli if you want views without chaos.
Stay in Fira if you want convenience and nightlife.
Stay in Pyrgos if you want authenticity and quiet.
Stay in Kamari/Perissa if you want beach vibes and better prices.

My honest take is that yes, Santorini is expensive, especially for caldera-view hotels, but it's worth it!
If you're celebrating something special I would choose to splurge on at least a couple of nights in a caldera cave suite. If you need to watch the budget, then move to a more affordable beach hotel later on. That way you experience both sides of the island without completely blowing your budget.
I hope this helps you plan your upcoming adventure to beautiful Santorini. If you have any questions about travel in Greece, or just want to follow along as I travel the world full time, don‘t hesitate to reach out to me on social media. I would love to connect and help out!
