Santorini’s dramatic cliffside towns, black-sand beaches, and iconic white-washed architecture make it one of Europe’s most photogenic islands, but choosing where to stay can make or break your trip. Whether you want a honeymoon-worthy cave suite with private plunge pool or a relaxed beachfront room with sound of waves outside, here’s a guide to the most charming villages to base yourself in Santorini, and some recommendations for hotels for every budget in each area.

Santorini is one of those islands where the area you stay completely shapes your experience. I’ve learned that Santorini can either feel pretty crowded or extremely peaceful, and it mostly depends on choosing the right base as well as how to spend your time there.

Quick Overview: Which Area Should You Stay In?

Before reading more about each area, here’s a quick feel for each of them:

Now let’s break it down properly.

Oia – For Iconic Postcard Views

Oia is Santorini’s most famous village and the place you'll find on every postcard. Imagine white cave hotels carved into cliffs, infinity pools spilling into the caldera and private terraces where you can watch the sunset without fighting the crowds. It’s undeniably magical — but it’s also the most expensive area on the island.

This is where I based myself on my first visit and I stayed at the White Pearl Laokasto Hotel. It was the perfect pick for me, just of the mains street of Oia with a decent price for a stunning hotel.

Imerovigli - Quiet Luxury

Often called “the Balcony of the Aegean,” Imerovigli sits between Fira and Oia with arguably some of the best caldera views on the island — but without Oia’s crowds. It’s ideal if you want romance and serenity. This area doesn't have any day trippers so you will definitely find it more peaceful than most of the other villages.

If I could choose where to stay again purely for balance, I might pick Imerovigli.

Fira – Central & Lively

Fira is the island’s capital and therefore easiest to reach. It's full of shops, nightlife and restaurants. It’s a great home base if you want to explore Santorini without staying right on the caldera.

In my opinion it's not as romantic and charming as Oia or any of the other villages, but it’s convenient and has the biggest variety of accommodations.

If you want energy, nightlife and easy transport access, this is where you should base yourself.

Pyrgos – Authentic & Underrated

If you want a quieter, more local side of Santorini, villages like Pyrgos offer great views, great tavernas, and more wallet-friendly accommodation.

Small boutique guesthouses here offer incredible value compared to caldera towns. You won’t always get direct cliff views — but you’ll get charm.

Kamari & Perissa – Beach Vibes & Budget Friendly

If you want beach days, sunbeds, and relaxed tavernas instead of caldera cliffs, head to Kamari or Perissa. These black-sand beach towns are much more affordable and feel like a traditional Greek summer destination.

You’ll find plenty of family-run studios and small hotels here for very reasonable prices — especially outside peak season.

Tips for Choosing the Right Spot in Santorini

Santorini

Conclusion: How to Choose the Right Area for You

Stay in Oia if you want iconic views and romance.

Stay in Imerovigli if you want views without chaos.

Stay in Fira if you want convenience and nightlife.

Stay in Pyrgos if you want authenticity and quiet.

Stay in Kamari/Perissa if you want beach vibes and better prices.

My honest take is that yes, Santorini is expensive, especially for caldera-view hotels, but it's worth it!

If you're celebrating something special I would choose to splurge on at least a couple of nights in a caldera cave suite. If you need to watch the budget, then move to a more affordable beach hotel later on. That way you experience both sides of the island without completely blowing your budget.

I hope this helps you plan your upcoming adventure to beautiful Santorini. If you have any questions about travel in Greece, or just want to follow along as I travel the world full time, don‘t hesitate to reach out to me on social media. I would love to connect and help out!
