If you’re looking for an island in Greece that has endless sandy beaches, stunning mountain villages, ancient ruins, incredible food, and authentic Greek charm — without the overwhelming crowds — Naxos might be exactly what you’re searching for.

I spent parts of my summer in Naxos and absolutely fell in love. I relaxed at the various beaches, wandered through the cozy towns, explored the ancient ruins and had insane amounts of greek food. After doing tons of research before I left and learning so much more while in Naxos I've gathered it all here to make it even easier for you to plan your upcoming trip.

The Best Things to Do in Naxos

As always I’ll start with the fun part first, namely the top things to do in Naxos. If you also want more practical information like my favourite restaurants, the places I recommend staying and more, just scroll further down and you’ll find everything you need to plan your perfect trip.

Watch the Sunset at the Portara

The most iconic landmark on the island is the Portara. It's a massive marble doorway that’s all that remains of an unfinished Temple of Apollo dating back to 530 BC.

It stands on a tiny islet connected to Naxos Town. At sunset the light frames the stone doorway and it's truly an amazing sight to behold. It’s quite popular around sunset, but I still didn't think it was too crowded. You will be able to enjoy it and get your pictures without any problems.

Wander Through Naxos Town (Chora)

Naxos Town, often called Chora, is one of the most charming towns in the Cyclades.

Wander through the narrow and whitewashed alleyways, admire the pink bougainvillea from different balconies, shop in artisan shops and check out tiny wine bars. You can also climb to the top of the Kastro district for panoramic views of the town below.

Relax on Agios Prokopios Beach

Agios Prokopios Beach is one of the best beaches in Greece. It has long stretches of golden sand and crystal-clear, shallow water that’s perfect for swimming. It’s also organized in sections with sunbeds and beach bars, but you’ll also find plenty of open sand if you prefer a quieter setup. It has something for every one. I absolutely loved having beach days here, just relaxing.

Swim at Agia Anna

Right next to Agios Prokopios is Agia Anna Beach.

This area feels slightly more intimate, with small coves and excellent seaside tavernas. It’s a great base if you want beach access combined with restaurants and nightlife within walking distance.

Relaxing at the beach in Naxos

Explore the Mountain Villages

When visiting Naxos, many people choose to just explore the beaches, but I recommend setting aside at least one day to explore one or more of the mountain villages.

Rent a car and drive inland to some of the villages. Start with a visit to Apeiranthos, a village built entirely from marble, with narrow stone alleys and panoramic views over the valley.

Later on drive 15 minutes to another village called Filoti. They're equally charming but still quite different. I loved them both and they are both quite small so you wont have any problem seeing them both in one day.

If you don't feel comfortable renting a car, you can choose to do this highlights tour that takes you to different villages as well as the Temple of Demeter.

Visit the Temple of Demeter

Set in the countryside near Sagri, you will find The Temple of Demeter which dates back to the 6th century BC and is dedicated to the goddess of agriculture.

It’s not huge and it is quite a drive, so unless you have some extra time, love visiting ancient temples or if you’re already driving around the island, this might not be a place to prioritise. However, I went there and thought it was pretty cool to see, in addition you get to drive through some really cool landscape and valleys along the way.

Hike Mount Zas

Mount Zas is the highest peak in the Cyclades, and according to mythology, where Zeus was raised. You can choose to hike to the top to get some amazing views across the island. The hike is supposed to take between 2,5-3 hours.

I personally didn't to this hike because I thought it was way too hot do to in July. But if you visit at any other time of year or just want to get a super early start to the day and can avoid the heat, I would absolutely add this to the Naxos itinerary.

Take a Day Trip to Koufonisia

From Naxos port, you can easily reach a smaller island called Koufonisia.

The water here is impossibly turquoise, and the island is small enough to explore by foot. It makes for a dreamy day trip if you want even quieter beaches. You can choose to head there or on your own, or join a boat tour that will take you to a couple of different locations you can't reach on foot as well.

Try Local Naxian Food & Cheese

Visit a local farm or stop at a traditional taverna in the mountains to try graviera cheese, slow-cooked lamb, and dishes made with ingredients grown just minutes away.

There are also some really great vineyards to check out if you love wine. Either rent a car and head out to explore on your own or do a guided tour to sample different food and wine. Or even better, join a cooking class to learn how to make the best delicacies.
