Is Krabi Still Worth Visiting? The Pros & Cons of Visiting Ao Nang

When I was planning my trip to southern Thailand, I kept seeing mixed opinions about Ao Nang. Some travellers described it as the perfect base for exploring Krabi, while others dismissed it as a touristy beach town with little character of its own. After spending time there myself, I can honestly say that both sides have a point.

Ao Nang isn't the kind of destination that instantly steals your heart the way a tiny island or hidden beach might. It doesn't have the laid-back atmosphere of Koh Lanta, or the hidden gem feeling of Koh Yao Yai. At first glance, it can feel busy, commercialized, and built around tourism.

And yet, I ended up enjoying my time there far more than I expected.

The truth is that Ao Nang works best when you stop expecting it to be a picture-perfect tropical paradise and start appreciating it for what it actually is: one of the most convenient and beautiful bases for exploring southern Thailand.

So, is Ao Nang worth visiting? Here's my honest opinion, including what I loved, what I didn't love, and who I think should add it to their Thailand itinerary.

Is Ao Nang Worth Visiting?

Yes, Ao Nang is worth visiting, but probably not for the reasons you think.

If you're looking for a pristine beach destination where you'll spend every day swimming in crystal-clear water and relaxing on untouched sands, Ao Nang may leave you disappointed.

However, if you're looking for a place with incredible scenery, easy access to some of Thailand's most beautiful islands, great food, comfortable accommodation, and enough activities to keep you busy for days, Ao Nang is an excellent choice.

What surprised me most was how quickly it grew on me. While I wasn't immediately impressed when I arrived, I found myself appreciating the convenience, the stunning limestone cliffs, and the endless options for day trips and adventures.

By the time I left, I understood why so many travellers use Ao Nang as their base in Krabi.

However, I do think it's important do say that your experience of Ao Nang and Krabi will probably only be as good as your research and planning. You can easily end up hating it here if you base yourself in the wrong area or just eat at one of the many bad restaurants.

Where Is Ao Nang?

Ao Nang is a beach town located in Krabi Province on Thailand's Andaman Coast.

It sits roughly 30 minutes from Krabi International Airport and serves as the main tourist hub for exploring the surrounding region.

From here, it's easy to visit Railay Beach, the Phi Phi Islands, Hong Islands, Poda Island, and countless other famous destinations.

Its location is one of its greatest strengths. Unlike some Thai islands that require multiple ferry journeys, Ao Nang is incredibly easy to reach while still offering access to some of the country's most spectacular scenery.

What I Loved About Ao Nang

The Limestone Cliffs Are Absolutely Stunning

The first thing that struck me about Ao Nang was the scenery.

Towering limestone karsts rise dramatically from the sea and surround the coastline, creating some of the most recognizable landscapes in Thailand. Even after spending time in other beautiful parts of the country, I still found myself stopping to admire the views.

While Ao Nang beach itself may not be the most beautiful in Thailand, the backdrop certainly is stunning. It's impossible to deny that Ao Nang sits in one of the most spectacular settings in the country.

It's an Amazing Base for Day Trips

I think this is where Ao Nang truly shines and why so many people come here.

Many of Thailand's most famous islands and beaches are within easy reach. Whether you're interested in snorkelling, kayaking, island hopping, rock climbing, or simply relaxing on beautiful beaches, there are countless options available.

Railay Beach is just a short longtail boat ride away, and spending a day there was easily one of the highlights of my time in Krabi. The Hong Islands, Four Islands Tour, and Phi Phi Islands are also easily accessible from Ao Nang.

If you're someone who likes to stay active and explore, you'll never run out of things to do.

I did lots of tours and day trips from Ao Nang, and most of them were really good. However, it depends on how you like to spend your day. Many of the tours can feel a bit hectic and crowded, so if that doesn't sound like something for you I truly recommend hiring a private longtail boat at least once to take you to just one or two spots instead of island hopping the same route as everyone else does.

If you only have time for one, I recommend Hong Island. It's absolutely stuning and you can easily spend a full day there.

If you want to see Hong Island and actually spend some extra time there, this is the tour I recommend. You can also add on more stops as you please, just arrange with your guide.

There Are Endless Restaurants and Cafes

Another thing I appreciated about Ao Nang was the variety of food.

You’ll find everything from local Thai restaurants and street food stalls to international cafes and seafood restaurants overlooking the beach, there is something for almost every budget and taste.

After visiting some smaller islands where dining options can be limited, it was refreshing to have so much choice.

As with most touristy areas you'll find some really great spots hidden amongst plenty of unremarkable spots, so make sure to check reviews before you visit.

It's Easy to Reach

Not every destination in Thailand is convenient.

Some islands require long ferry rides, complicated transfers, and hours of travel. Ao Nang is different. You can fly into Krabi Airport and be checking into your hotel less than an hour later.

For travellers with limited time, this convenience is a huge advantage and I can especially see why people who travel from far away or in huge groups find it easy to just get here and use it as a base.

What I Didn't Love About Ao Nang

The Main Beach Isn't the Best in Thailand

Let's start with the biggest disappointment.

While Ao Nang Beach is pleasant enough for a stroll or a sunset, it's not the kind of beach that will leave you speechless.

The water isn't as clear as you'll find on nearby islands, and the sand isn't as soft or picturesque as beaches like Railay or Kantiang Bay on Koh Lanta.

If you're expecting a tropical beach paradise right outside your hotel, you may be underwhelmed.

It Can Feel Very Touristy

There's no way around it: Ao Nang is a tourist town.

The main strip is filled with restaurants, massage shops, tour agencies, souvenir stores, and bars catering primarily to visitors.

Personally, I didn't mind this too much because it made everything incredibly convenient. However, if you're searching for an authentic Thai village atmosphere, you probably won't find it here.

It Lacks the Charm of Some Other Thai Destinations

Compared to places like Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Yai, or Phuket Old Town, Ao Nang doesn't have a particularly strong sense of identity. It's functional rather than charming.

People don't usually visit Ao Nang because they fall in love with the town itself. They visit because of everything surrounding it. And honestly, that's okay.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Ao Nang?

I think three to five days is ideal.

This gives you enough time to enjoy the town, visit Railay Beach, take an island-hopping tour, enjoy some great restaurants, and experience the area's incredible scenery.

Many travellers use Ao Nang as a short stop before continuing to the islands, but I think it deserves at least a few days of its own.

Is Ao Nang Better Than Phuket?

This is one of the most common questions people ask.

For me, Ao Nang feels smaller, easier to navigate, and more focused on nature and outdoor activities. Phuket offers more nightlife, shopping, luxury resorts, and entertainment.

If your priority is island hopping, beautiful scenery, and adventure, I would choose Ao Nang.

If you're looking for nightlife, beach clubs, and a wider range of attractions, Phuket may be a better fit.

I've been to Phuket a couple of times and it really depends on where you go. I personally hate the centre there and think it's way too touristy. On my most recent visit there in 2026 I actually ended up leaving after just one night. However, you can find some really nice hotels in Phuket further out from the city if you just want to relax and enjoy the beach.

My Honest Opinion of Ao Nang

Going into my visit, I wasn't convinced I would like Ao Nang.

I had read too many comments calling it overcrowded and touristy. While some of those criticisms are fair, they don't tell the whole story.

What I found was a destination that makes exploring southern Thailand incredibly easy. The scenery is breathtaking, the food is excellent, and the opportunities for adventure are endless.

No, it isn't the most charming place in Thailand. No, the main beach isn't the best.

Would I visit again? Probably, but it wouldn't be the only place I visited during my stay. I would combine it with some of the other islands in the area to get a mix of the touristy side and the calmer side.
