While many people assume Krabi is just one place, it's actually a province made up of several very different areas, each offering its own atmosphere, attractions, and style of accommodation.

I've spent time exploring both Krabi Town and Ao Nang, visited Railay Beach several times, and taken day trips to many of the surrounding islands.

One thing I quickly realised is that where you stay can completely change your experience.

If you're dreaming of lively nightlife and island-hopping tours, Ao Nang is hard to beat.

If you prefer a quieter holiday with luxury resorts, Tubkaek Beach might be exactly what you're looking for.

Meanwhile, Krabi Town offers a more authentic local experience and is perfect if you're travelling on a budget.

In this guide, I'll walk you through the best areas to stay in Krabi, explain who each area is best suited for, and recommend some fantastic hotels for every budget.

Best Area to Stay in Krabi Overall: Ao Nang

If it's your first time visiting Krabi, I almost always recommend staying in Ao Nang. At least for some of your stay.

It's the main tourist hub and offers the best balance of beautiful beaches, restaurants, nightlife, convenience, and easy access to many of Krabi's famous islands.

This is where you'll find hundreds of restaurants serving everything from authentic Thai food to international cuisine, lively beach bars, massage shops, cafés, dive centres, travel agencies, and countless accommodation options for every budget.

Ao Nang Beach itself isn't the most spectacular beach in Krabi, but it's still a lovely place to watch the sunset.

Even better, it's the main departure point for longtail boats to Railay Beach, as well as many of the area's most popular island-hopping tours to destinations like the Hong Islands, Phi Phi Islands, and James Bond Island.

If you enjoy having plenty of dining options within walking distance and want to be close to everything, Ao Nang is an excellent base.

However, it has to be said that Ao Nang is incredibly touristy. There’s no denying it. So if you're looking for a more remote spot away from the tourist shops, then this is not the spot for you.

If you come here, it's probably mostly to unwind rather than sightsee.

Despite its peaceful setting, you're only around a 25-minute drive from Ao Nang if you want to explore restaurants or book island tours.

If you've ever seen photos of Krabi's towering limestone cliffs rising out of turquoise water, there's a good chance they were taken at Railay Beach.

Although it's technically part of the mainland, Railay can only be reached by boat, giving it a more secluded feel.

Staying here is a completely different experience from staying in Ao Nang.

During the day, Railay can get quite busy with day-trippers, but once the last longtail boats leave in the late afternoon, the beaches become much quieter and the atmosphere turns wonderfully peaceful.

Railay is famous for its world-class rock climbing, spectacular beaches, hidden lagoons, and incredible viewpoints.

You can easily spend your days relaxing on the sand, kayaking, hiking to the Railay Viewpoint, or exploring nearby Phra Nang Cave Beach.

The downside is that accommodation is more expensive, and you'll have fewer restaurants and shops compared to Ao Nang.

However, if waking up just steps from one of Thailand's most iconic beaches sounds like your idea of paradise, Railay is hard to beat.

Best Area for Budget Travellers & Local Culture: Krabi Town

While many visitors head straight to Ao Nang, Krabi Town deserves far more attention than it gets.

It may not have a beach, but it offers a much more authentic side of southern Thailand, with local markets, excellent restaurants and significantly lower accommodation prices.

Krabi Town also makes an excellent base if you're planning day trips to attractions like Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool, Hot Springs, or even Khao Sok National Park.

Accommodation here is generally much cheaper than in Ao Nang, making it a great option for backpackers, digital nomads, and travellers planning a longer stay.

I stayed here for a while and had a wonderful time. Even though I really liked it, I wouldn't recommend it if you're short on time in Thailand and just want to relax on the beach.

In most cases, I recommend spending at least three to five nights in Krabi.

If you have longer, consider splitting your stay between Ao Nang and either Railay Beach or Tubkaek Beach.

That way, you'll get to experience both the lively atmosphere and the quieter, more scenic side of Krabi.
