I've spent time exploring both Krabi Town and Ao Nang, visited Railay Beach several times, and taken day trips to many of the surrounding islands.
One thing I quickly realised is that where you stay can completely change your experience.
If you're dreaming of lively nightlife and island-hopping tours, Ao Nang is hard to beat.
If you prefer a quieter holiday with luxury resorts, Tubkaek Beach might be exactly what you're looking for.
Meanwhile, Krabi Town offers a more authentic local experience and is perfect if you're travelling on a budget.
In this guide, I'll walk you through the best areas to stay in Krabi, explain who each area is best suited for, and recommend some fantastic hotels for every budget.
At the end of the guide, you'll also find my picks for the best luxury hotels, mid-range hotels, budget hotels, family resorts, and romantic stays in Krabi to help you choose the perfect accommodation.

Best Area to Stay in Krabi Overall: Ao Nang
If it's your first time visiting Krabi, I almost always recommend staying in Ao Nang. At least for some of your stay.
It's the main tourist hub and offers the best balance of beautiful beaches, restaurants, nightlife, convenience, and easy access to many of Krabi's famous islands.
This is where you'll find hundreds of restaurants serving everything from authentic Thai food to international cuisine, lively beach bars, massage shops, cafés, dive centres, travel agencies, and countless accommodation options for every budget.
Ao Nang Beach itself isn't the most spectacular beach in Krabi, but it's still a lovely place to watch the sunset.
Even better, it's the main departure point for longtail boats to Railay Beach, as well as many of the area's most popular island-hopping tours to destinations like the Hong Islands, Phi Phi Islands, and James Bond Island.
If you enjoy having plenty of dining options within walking distance and want to be close to everything, Ao Nang is an excellent base.
However, it has to be said that Ao Nang is incredibly touristy. There’s no denying it. So if you're looking for a more remote spot away from the tourist shops, then this is not the spot for you.

Best Area for Luxury & Honeymoons: Tubkaek Beach
If you're looking for white sand beaches, five-star resorts, and a peaceful escape, Tubkaek Beach is one of the best places to stay in Krabi.
Unlike the lively atmosphere of Ao Nang, Tubkaek feels quiet, exclusive, and incredibly relaxing. The beach faces the dramatic limestone islands of the Andaman Sea, creating some of the most beautiful sunset views anywhere in Krabi.
If you come here, it's probably mostly to unwind rather than sightsee.
Many of the resorts here feature private beaches, infinity pools, world-class spas, and excellent restaurants, making the area particularly popular with honeymooners and couples celebrating special occasions.
Despite its peaceful setting, you're only around a 25-minute drive from Ao Nang if you want to explore restaurants or book island tours.
Best Hotels at Tubkaek Beach

This is one of the finest luxury resorts in southern Thailand. It features private pool villas, an exceptional spa, world-class dining, and direct access to Tubkaek Beach. The service is outstanding, making it one of the best honeymoon hotels in Krabi.

Best Area for Beaches & Dramatic Scenery: Railay Beach
If you've ever seen photos of Krabi's towering limestone cliffs rising out of turquoise water, there's a good chance they were taken at Railay Beach.
Although it's technically part of the mainland, Railay can only be reached by boat, giving it a more secluded feel.
Staying here is a completely different experience from staying in Ao Nang.
During the day, Railay can get quite busy with day-trippers, but once the last longtail boats leave in the late afternoon, the beaches become much quieter and the atmosphere turns wonderfully peaceful.
Railay is famous for its world-class rock climbing, spectacular beaches, hidden lagoons, and incredible viewpoints.
You can easily spend your days relaxing on the sand, kayaking, hiking to the Railay Viewpoint, or exploring nearby Phra Nang Cave Beach.
The downside is that accommodation is more expensive, and you'll have fewer restaurants and shops compared to Ao Nang.
However, if waking up just steps from one of Thailand's most iconic beaches sounds like your idea of paradise, Railay is hard to beat.
Best Hotels in Railay Beach

If you're travelling on a budget but still want to stay on Railay, this is the best option. Set on a hillside surrounded by tropical jungle, the simple wooden bungalows offer plenty of character and fantastic views. It's only a short walk from the beaches and provide a peaceful escape.

Best Area for Budget Travellers & Local Culture: Krabi Town
While many visitors head straight to Ao Nang, Krabi Town deserves far more attention than it gets.
It may not have a beach, but it offers a much more authentic side of southern Thailand, with local markets, excellent restaurants and significantly lower accommodation prices.
Krabi Town also makes an excellent base if you're planning day trips to attractions like Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool, Hot Springs, or even Khao Sok National Park.
Accommodation here is generally much cheaper than in Ao Nang, making it a great option for backpackers, digital nomads, and travellers planning a longer stay.
I stayed here for a while and had a wonderful time. Even though I really liked it, I wouldn't recommend it if you're short on time in Thailand and just want to relax on the beach.
I personally use SafetyWing and highly recommend it for every kind of trip. Check their prices & plans here.

Best Area for Families & Quiet Beaches: Klong Muang Beach
If Ao Nang feels a little too busy but Tubkaek seems too secluded, Klong Muang Beach might be for you.
Located around 20 minutes north of Ao Nang, this peaceful stretch of coastline offers beautiful sandy beaches, calm water, and a much more relaxed atmosphere.
Unlike Ao Nang, there are no loud beach bars or busy streets here. Instead, you'll find a collection of excellent restaurants, beachfront cafés, and luxury resorts spread along the shoreline.
The calm sea makes Klong Muang particularly popular with families travelling with young children.
It's also close enough to Ao Nang that you can easily visit for dinner or tours while enjoying a more peaceful place to stay.
Then I recommend booking one of these full day trips that takes you around Krabi and the surrounding islands.

Which Area Should You Choose?
If you're still unsure where to stay in Krabi, here's my recommendation:
- Want easy access to everything: Stay in Ao Nang.
- Luxury holiday or honeymoon: Choose Tubkaek Beach.
- Best beaches and scenery: Stay on Railay Beach.
- Budget trip and local culture: Base yourself in Krabi Town.
- Relaxing family holiday: Pick Klong Muang Beach.
In most cases, I recommend spending at least three to five nights in Krabi.
If you have longer, consider splitting your stay between Ao Nang and either Railay Beach or Tubkaek Beach.
That way, you'll get to experience both the lively atmosphere and the quieter, more scenic side of Krabi.

Tips for Booking Hotels in Krabi
A little planning can save you money and help you find the best accommodation.
- Book at least 2–3 months in advance if you're travelling between November and March, as this is Krabi's busiest season.
- Beachfront hotels often sell out first during Christmas, New Year, and school holidays.
- If you're visiting during the rainy season (May to October), you'll usually find much better hotel deals.
- If you're planning several island tours, staying in Ao Nang will save both time and transport costs.
- If you want complete peace and quiet, choose Tubkaek Beach or Klong Muang Beach over Ao Nang.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should you stay in Ao Nang or Krabi Town?
Personally, if it's your first visit, I'd recommend staying in Ao Nang. It's much more convenient for sightseeing, beaches, and day trips.
However, if you're travelling for longer, splitting your time between Ao Nang and Krabi Town lets you experience two very different sides of the province.
What is the best area to stay in Krabi?
For most visitors, Ao Nang is the best place to stay thanks to its restaurants, nightlife, tour options, and easy access to nearby islands.
Is Ao Nang or Railay better?
Ao Nang is more convenient and has a much wider range of restaurants, shops, and accommodation.
Railay offers more spectacular scenery and beautiful beaches but has fewer facilities and can only be reached by boat.
How many days should you stay in Krabi?
I recommend spending at least three to five days in Krabi.
This gives you enough time to visit the beaches, take an island-hopping tour, explore Tiger Cave Temple, and enjoy the local food scene.
Is Krabi good for families?
Absolutely. Calm beaches like Klong Muang and Nopparat Thara are particularly well suited to families. Many resorts also offer children's pools and family rooms.
Is Krabi expensive?
Krabi can suit almost any budget.
Backpackers can easily find affordable guesthouses and hostels, while luxury travellers can choose from world-class beachfront resorts.
Food and local transport are generally very reasonably priced compared to many other beach destinations.
Final Thoughts
Krabi has a place to stay for every type of traveller.
If it's your first visit, Ao Nang is the most convenient base and offers easy access to beaches, restaurants, and island tours.
For a romantic escape, Tubkaek Beach and Railay Beach are hard to beat, while Krabi Town is ideal if you're looking for authentic local experiences and great value accommodation.
No matter where you choose to stay, you're never far from the dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, and unforgettable sunsets that make Krabi one of Thailand's most popular destinations.
