Bonaire was the island amongst the ABC-Islands that surprised me the most. It was the one we had scheduled the least time for, and also the one I ended up wanting to spend the most time on.

At first, it feels quiet and very remote. Almost too quiet. No big resorts, no crowds, no flashy beach clubs. Don’t get me wrong I love that, but when coming from other Caribbean islands it felt very unusual.

But then you start exploring… and suddenly you’re snorkeling with turtles straight from the shore, driving along wild coastlines, discovering hidden beaches, and watching some of the best sunsets in the Caribbean.

And that’s exactly what this itinerary is built for.

Not rushing. Not overplanning. But experiencing the absolute best of Bonaire in 5 days—at the perfect pace.

Exploring Bonaire

Why 5 Days in Bonaire is Perfect

I decided to create a 5 day itinerary because I think you can see the best highlights and some of the best hidden gems within that time frame, but if you have more time there is endless opportunity to see even more.

Bonaire isn’t a place where you need to rush.

In fact, the magic of the island is in slowing down—spending long afternoons in the water, taking scenic drives, and ending your days with sunset and good food.

With 5 days you'll have enough time to explore the entire island if you want to, both the stunning beaches and marine life, and also the more rugged inland landscape and history without feeling rushed.

Do You Need a Car in Bonaire?

Short answer: yes, I absolutely recommend it.

Bonaire is not like Aruba. There’s no real public transport, and the best spots are spread all around the island. If you don't have a car you have to rely upon booking tours to get to most places, and yes that is absolutely a great option but it doesn't give you the freedom to spend as much time at various spots as you like or just leave whenever you feel like it.

Having a car means you can:

Detailed Daily Itinerary Bonaire

Day 1: Arrival, Beach Time & Sunset Magic

After landing, pick up your rental car and head to your accommodation. Once you’ve checked in, the first thing you should do is… go straight into the ocean.

Bonaire is famous for its shore snorkelilng, and you don’t need a tour to experience it. Even a quick swim near your hotel can be incredible.

In the afternoon, head to Te Amo Beach, one of the most accessible and beautiful beaches on the island. The water here is calm, clear, and perfect for your first swim after a long day travelling.

You can choose to just take it easy and grab some dinner at one of the food trucks on the beach and watch the sunset or head into town for a nicer dinner. I recommend The Dock which isn’t so far from Te Amo Beach and has some amazing food.

Day 2: Snorkelling & Beach Hopping

Today is all about seeing some of Bonaire's most dramatic coastline and colourful marine life. Start by driving up the coast towards 1000 steps beach. No need to worry, it isn't actually 1000 steps, more like 100 maybe. Spend some time here snorkelling or just admiring the view.

You can of course choose to just spend the day here, but if you want to see as much as possible I recommend you drive on after a bit and just stop along the road anywhere you think looks nice. Trust me there will be no shortage of places you want to stop.

Some great spots I liked are called Karpata and Andrea I & II. They are all great for snorkelling.

Day 3: Klein Bonaire Beach Day

Today is all about that Caribbean dream. Head over to Klein Bonaire, a small, uninhabited island just off the coast. The beaches here are some of the most pristine in the Caribbean—white sand, turquoise water, and no development.

Spend your day snorkelling, relaxing on the beach and just floating in the crystal clear water. There’s no infrastructure here, so bring everything you need for the day —water, snacks, and sun protection.

You can choose to book a water taxi to get here or join a guided tour that includes some snorkelling stops along the way. An added bonus on some of the water taxi departures is that you can choose to jump of the boat early and snorkel your way to the island. For this you have to either bring all your stuff in a water proof bag or have someone take it to the island for you. It’s a great option to see some of the marine life if you don't want to go a guided tour.

You can book a water taxi here or join this tour that includes a couple of snorkelling stops along the way.

Day 4: Washington Slagbaai National Park Adventure

Wake up early to see a completely different side of Bonaire. Head to Washington Slagbaai National Park, a rugged, wild area covering the northern part of the island. The roads are rough, but the landscapes are absolutely worth it.

You’ll find dramatic coastlines, hidden beaches, blowholes and cactus-covered hills. This is also where I saw lots of flamingos while driving so make sure to stop by at the Flamingo viewing point where you’ll hopefully be able to see some.

This day feels more adventurous and less “beachy”—which is exactly what makes Bonaire so fun. It’s amazing how much variety one small island can show you!

End your day in Kralendijk and just wander around and admire the colorful buildings, grab an ice cream and relax. Alternatively if you want more action you can head out to Atlantis beach to either go kitesurfing if you already know how or take some lessons on the beach there. This is one of the best places in the world to learn how to kitesurfe, so if you’re interested this is the perfect place for it.

Day 5: South Bonaire Road Trip

This is another iconic experience in Bonaire. Start early and drive south along the coastline. The landscape here feels almost surreal, with bright blue ocean on one side and pink salt flats on the other. There are so many place you can choose to stop so just take your time and stop wherever you think looks good.

Some of my favourite spots along this route are:

This route is also dotted with some of the best snorkelling spots in Bonaire, many of them marked with yellow stones. So if you feel like snorkelling some more today, just pull over, jump in, and explore.

Since it’s your last day I recommend finishing of with some relaxing time on the beach. Heading to Sorobon beach makes sense on this route and is a perfect beach to end your stay in Bonaire.

Best Areas to Stay in Bonaire

We chose to base ourselves at the Ocean Breeze Hotel very close to Te Amo Beach and with a really nice restaurant attached to it. I would absolutely stay here again. You can find some more options I checked out and loved below.
