If you're planning a trip to Vietnam and wondering whether Con Dao is worth visiting, my answer is a definite yes. In fact, Con Dao was one of my favourite places in Vietnam, and I ended up spending weeks there simply relaxing, wandering around town and enjoying the island at a much slower pace than rest of my time in Vietnam.

Unlike Phu Quoc, which has become famous for its large resorts, amusement parks and beach clubs, Con Dao still feels relatively untouched. There are beautiful beaches, green mountains, lovely restaurants and plenty of things to do, but the atmosphere is completely different. It's not an island where you need to fill every day with activities. Sometimes, the best thing to do is rent a scooter, find a quiet beach, enjoy a long lunch or simply wander around town without a plan.

Of course, Con Dao isn't perfect for everyone. The beaches are beautiful, but it's worth keeping your expectations realistic. We're still in Vietnam, not the Seychelles, and while I think Con Dao has the nicest beaches I've seen in the country by far, they aren't necessarily the most spectacular beaches in the world.

So, is Con Dao worth adding to your Vietnam itinerary? Here's my honest take on what makes the island special, what you should know before visiting and who I think will enjoy it most.

Con Dao, Vietnam

What Makes Con Dao Special?

What I loved most about Con Dao was that it felt like a place where I could genuinely switch off. There's no pressure to constantly be doing something, no overwhelming crowds and no endless list of tourist attractions competing for your attention.

The island has a lovely balance of natural beauty and everyday Vietnamese life. You can spend the morning swimming at a beautiful beach, have a delicious lunch in town, visit a historical site in the afternoon and finish the day watching the sunset over the ocean.

Con Dao, Vietnam

Con Son, the main town, is small but has everything you need. There are plenty of hotels, cafés, restaurants and shops, so you won't feel like you're stranded on a remote island. At the same time, it hasn't lost its laid-back atmosphere.

I spent weeks here and never felt bored, even on the days when I didn't do much at all. And honestly, that's one of the biggest reasons I enjoyed Con Dao so much.

The Beaches Are Beautiful, but Keep Your Expectations Realistic

Let's start with one of the main reasons people visit Con Dao, it’s for the beaches.

I genuinely think Con Dao has the most beautiful beaches I've seen in Vietnam. The water can be wonderfully clear, the coastline is backed by lush green mountains, and there are plenty of quiet spots where you can enjoy the scenery and have a beach almost to yourself.

Some of my favourite places to visit include An Hai Beach, Dam Trau Beach and Nhat Beach. Each has a slightly different feel, and exploring the coastline is one of the best ways to experience the island.

However, I do want to be realistic here. If you're expecting the white-sand beaches of the Seychelles or the impossibly clear water of Bora Bora, you might be disappointed. Con Dao is beautiful, but it is still Vietnam, and the conditions can vary depending on the weather, season and location.

The water isn't always perfectly clear, and some beaches are rocky or have stronger waves. But if you appreciate natural scenery and peaceful beaches rather than picture-perfect tropical perfection, I think you'll love it.

There Are Plenty of Things to Do in Con Dao

One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was how much there is to do on Con Dao. Although the island is much quieter than Phu Quoc, you certainly won't run out of ways to spend your time.

You can hike through the national park, explore secluded beaches, go swimming, visit temples and discover the island's fascinating history. There are also opportunities for snorkelling, diving and boat trips when the weather allows.

And if you're someone who likes to balance sightseeing with relaxation, Con Dao is ideal. You can visit a few attractions in the morning and still have plenty of time to enjoy a slow afternoon by the sea.

The History Is Dark, but Worth Learning About

Con Dao isn't just about beaches and beautiful landscapes. The island also has a deeply significant and heartbreaking history.

During French colonial rule and later the Vietnam War, Con Dao was used as a place of imprisonment for political prisoners. The prison complex, including the infamous Tiger Cages, is now open to visitors and gives you a grim look at the conditions prisoners endured.

I think visiting these historical sites are an important part of understanding Con Dao and Vietnam in general. It's not necessarily an easy or enjoyable experience, but it provides a much deeper perspective on the island and Vietnam's history.

If you have time, I recommend visiting the prison museum and some of the former prison buildings. It's a very different experience from spending the day at the beach, but one that I think is well worth making time for.

The Food Scene Is Surprisingly Good

I'll admit that I wasn't expecting much from the food scene in Con Dao before arriving, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many good places there were to eat. There is a great selection of Vietnamese restaurants, particularly if you enjoy fresh seafood, but you'll also find international food, cafés and plenty of places to enjoy a good coffee.

I loved how easy it was to find somewhere to eat without having to plan everything in advance. Some evenings I'd simply wander around town, see what caught my eye and end up having a fantastic meal.

Con Dao, Vietnam

The seafood is definitely one of the highlights, and I recommend trying some of the local dishes while you're there. But even if you're not particularly adventurous with food, you'll find enough variety to keep you happy during a longer stay.

For me, having such a good selection of restaurants made a big difference. It's one of the reasons I could happily spend weeks on the island without feeling like I needed to move on.

Should You Visit the Turtle Sanctuary?

One experience I was particularly interested in was visiting a turtle conservation programme in Con Dao National Park.

Con Dao is an important nesting area for sea turtles, and there are conservation projects where visitors may be able to learn about the work being done to protect them. Depending on the programme and season, experiences can include learning about nesting beaches and turtle conservation, or witnessing hatchlings being released into the sea.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to visit myself. I had everything booked and planned, but due to bad weather all boats were stopped, so I wasn't able to make it out to the sanctuary.

I'm usually quite cautious about visiting animal sanctuaries and wildlife attractions, and I always recommend doing your own research before booking. Based on what I found while researching this experience, the conservation work in Con Dao appeared promising, but I can't personally vouch for the experience or its practices since I never got to visit myself.

Con Dao vs. Phu Quoc: What's the Difference?

If you're deciding between Con Dao and Phu Quoc, it's worth understanding that these two islands offer very different experiences.

Phu Quoc is much more developed and has a wider range of hotels, restaurants, beach clubs and entertainment. You'll find large resorts, amusement parks, theme parks and attractions, making it a popular choice for families and those who want plenty of activities in one destination.

Con Dao, on the other hand, is quieter and more focused on nature. There are no large amusement parks or elaborate resort complexes dominating the island. Instead, you'll find scenic coastal roads, beautiful beaches, hiking trails and a small town with a relaxed atmosphere.

Con Dao, Vietnam

Neither island is necessarily better than the other. It simply depends on what you're looking for. Personally, I preferred Con Dao because I was looking for somewhere peaceful and natural and I enjoyed being able to explore without feeling like I was constantly surrounded by tourist attractions.

But if you're travelling with children, enjoy nightlife or want a resort holiday with plenty of entertainment, Phu Quoc might be a better fit.

Will Con Dao Change?

One thing worth mentioning is that Con Dao may not stay as quiet and undeveloped as it is today.

During my stay, I spoke with a local who mentioned that the company behind many of the large developments on Phu Quoc and other cities in Vietnam had also acquired some rights on Con Dao. He believed that the island could see significant changes in the coming years.

I haven't independently verified the details of those plans, so I wouldn't want to make any definite predictions about what will happen. But it did make me think about how quickly a destination can change once larger tourism developments arrive.

For now, Con Dao still has a relatively natural feel, and that's a big part of its appeal. If you've been thinking about visiting, I wouldn't necessarily put it off.

I'm not against development, and tourism can bring important benefits to local communities. But I personally prefer when some of the natural environment is kept as is, which I don’t think is the case on Phu Quoc. However, that is just my personal opinion.

How Many Days Do You Need in Con Dao?

I'd recommend spending at least three days in Con Dao, although I personally think it's a destination where a longer stay really pays off. As I’ve said I ended up spending weeks there.

With three days, you can visit the main historical sites, explore a few beaches, enjoy the food scene and get a feel for the island. If you have four or five days, you'll have more time for hiking, boat trips and exploring the quieter corners of Con Dao without rushing.

And if you're a slow traveller like me, you could easily spend a week or more here. I spent weeks on the island and loved having the freedom to do very little on some days. There's something lovely about finding a favourite restaurant, returning to the same beach or simply enjoying the routine of island life.

If you're planning a longer Vietnam itinerary, Con Dao is also a great place to take a break from constantly moving between destinations.

Where Are the Con Dao Islands?

The Con Dao Islands are an archipelago located off the southern coast of Vietnam in the South China Sea. The main island is called Con Son Island, and this is where almost all hotels, restaurants, and attractions are located.

Despite becoming more popular in recent years, Con Dao still feels surprisingly untouched compared to many other islands in Southeast Asia.

What is the Best Time to Visit Con Dao

The best time to visit Con Dao is generally from February to September when the sea is calmer and visibility for snorkelling and diving is better.

The islands can still be visited year-round, but weather changes depending on which side of the islands you’re on. Even during rainy season, you’ll often still get beautiful sunny mornings.

If you want to see sea turtles nesting, the best period is usually May to October, but as I experienced, even then it’s no guarantee you’ll be able to get there.

Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Con Dao?

Con Son town is the most convenient choice for first-time visitors, food lovers and anyone who wants to explore the island rather than spend their entire trip at a resort.

An Hai Beach and the southern side of town are good if you want to be close to the beach while still being within easy reach of restaurants and the centre.

Dat Doc Beach is where you'll find Six Senses Con Dao. This is the choice for those looking for a secluded luxury escape where the resort itself is a big part of the holiday.

Below are the three best hotels on Con Dao I would check out first.

The Secret Con Dao

This is one of the more upscale options close to town and is a good choice if you want the comfort and facilities of a larger hotel without staying at a remote resort. It’s close to the waterfront, and has a large swimming pool, restaurants, a spa and modern rooms.

Final Thoughts: Is Con Dao Worth Visiting?

For me, Con Dao was absolutely worth visiting. In fact, it was one of the places in Vietnam where I felt happiest simply being there, without needing to do much at all.

I loved the beaches, the scenery, the food and the relaxed atmosphere. I loved wandering around town, discovering new restaurants and spending days without a fixed plan. And I appreciated that Con Dao still feels like a natural island rather than a destination built entirely around tourism.

Of course, it's not for everyone. If you're looking for beach clubs, parties and large-scale attractions, you'll probably find Phu Quoc more suitable. And if you're expecting the beaches to rival the Seychelles, it's important to adjust your expectations.

But if you want somewhere beautiful, peaceful and a little different from the more famous destinations in Vietnam, I genuinely think Con Dao deserves a place on your itinerary.
