Hue isn’t a huge city, but where you stay can still change your experience of the city completely. The city is split by the Perfume River, with the historic Imperial City on the north side and the busier modern centre on the south. Then, once you move a little further out, you'll find quieter neighbourhoods, garden houses and beautiful villages in the countryside.

For most people, staying in central Hue is the easiest option, especially if you’re just visiting for a night or two. This is where you'll find the biggest selection of restaurants, cafés, bars and hotels, and you can easily get around the city from here.

But I wouldn't automatically book the first hotel you find in the city centre. If you're visiting Hue mainly for the Imperial City and historical sights, staying on the north side of the river can be really atmospheric. If you want a nicer hotel with river views, the area around Le Loi and Vinh Ninh is worth looking at. And if you want to slow down and experience a greener, more local side of Hue, staying around Thủy Biều is a completely different experience.

I've put together this guide to the best areas to stay in Hue, including what each area is like, who it's best for and some of the best hotels to consider.

Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay in Hue?

If you don’t have time to read the full article and just want the quick answer, these are the areas I'd look at first:

I recommend checking out these three hotels in various parts of Hue first.

Meliá Vinpearl Hue
Meliá Vinpearl Hue

If you want something more upscale without moving away from the centre, this is one of the obvious choices. The hotel occupies a prominent high-rise in central Hue, giving many rooms impressive views across the city, and it's a good option if you want modern facilities after a day of sightseeing.

Ancient Huế Garden Houses

For something much more atmospheric, this offers a boutique experience inspired by traditional Hue architecture and garden houses. This is the kind of accommodation I'd choose if the hotel itself is meant to be part of the experience rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

This is a polished five-star option in a quieter, tree-lined part of central Hue. It has a large pool, spa and several dining options, making it a good choice if you want a full-service hotel while still being close to the river and major sights.

Map of the Best Hotels in Hue

Below you'll find a map where I've pinned my favourite hotels in Hue to make it easier for you to navigate when you're looking for where you want to base yourself.

For most people visiting Hue for two or three nights, I'd choose Phú Hội or the central riverside area. You'll have the easiest access to restaurants and transport, while the Imperial City and other attractions are only a short ride away.

If you have more time, though, don't be afraid to stay somewhere a little further out. Hue isn't a city where you need to be in the middle of everything all the time.

Phú Hội and Hue City Centre – Best Area to Stay in Hue for First-Time Visitors

If it's your first time in Hue and you want somewhere easy, Phú Hội is probably the safest choice.

This is the main tourist area on the south side of the Perfume River, with a huge selection of hotels, guesthouses, cafés, restaurants and bars. Streets around Nguyễn Công Trứ, Chu Văn An and Võ Thị Sáu are particularly popular and you'll find everything from cheap rooms and hostels to stylish boutique hotels and larger four- and five-star properties.

It's also one of the easiest areas to explore on foot. You can walk down towards the Perfume River, cross Trường Tiền Bridge and continue towards the Imperial City.

The area also becomes particularly lively in the evening, with restaurants, bars and walking streets around Võ Thị Sáu, Chu Văn An and Phạm Ngũ Lão. If you're looking for somewhere with a bit of nightlife, this is definitely the part of Hue I'd choose.

The downside is that it doesn't necessarily feel like the historic Hue you may have imagined. You're in the modern tourist centre, rather than surrounded by imperial architecture and old buildings.

This is a popular choice if you want a comfortable hotel in the heart of the action without spending a fortune. It's tucked slightly away from the busiest streets, while still being within easy reach of restaurants, bars and the river.

Around the Imperial City – Best Area to Stay in Hue for History

Staying around the Imperial City gives you a very different experience from staying in Phú Hội.

The Imperial City sits on the north bank of the Perfume River, and this side of Hue is much quieter and more residential. You'll be close to the main historical sights, including the Imperial Citadel and the pagoda.

The biggest advantage is obvious: you can get up early and walk to the Imperial City before the crowds arrive.

Hue Imperial city

The area is also lovely if you enjoy wandering without a plan. There are quieter streets, old houses, local cafés and residential neighbourhoods where you'll see a more everyday side of Hue. It's not as packed with restaurants and bars as Phú Hội, so you'll probably cross the river if you want more choice for dinner.

This is an area I'd particularly recommend if you're interested in Hue's history and want your surroundings to reflect that. Just don't expect a huge selection of large international hotels. Most accommodation here is smaller hotels, guesthouses and home stays.

Spatel d'Annam - Imperial Boutique Spa & Hotel

This is one of the more distinctive places to stay on the Citadel side of Hue. Its location close to the Imperial City makes it particularly appealing if you want to be surrounded by the history of the old capital rather than staying in the modern tourist centre.

Vinh Ninh and the Perfume River – Best Area to Stay in Hue for Luxury

If you want to stay somewhere a little more peaceful but still be close to the centre, look around Vinh Ninh and the Perfume River, particularly along Le Loi.

This area has some of Hue's most attractive upscale hotels and is a good choice if you're looking for a more relaxed stay rather than being right in the middle of the backpacker and nightlife scene.

Boat ride on the Perfume river

The Perfume River is the star here. Staying along the river means you can walk along the waterfront, watch boats pass by and easily reach Trường Tiền Bridge and the centre of Hue.

There are several historic and luxury hotels around here, including some of the city's most well-known properties. You can still reach the Imperial City easily by taxi or Grab, so you're not sacrificing too much convenience.

If you're looking for a special hotel in Hue, this is one I'd definitely consider. The historic Art Deco property sits directly beside the Perfume River and combines colonial architecture with a beautiful garden setting. It's a great choice if you want the hotel to feel like part of the Hue experience.

Thủy Biều – Best Area to Stay in Hue for a Quiet and Local Experience

If you want to get away from the city completely, Thủy Biều village is where I'd look.

This area just outside central Hue is known for its traditional garden houses, greenery, orchards and quiet countryside roads. It's particularly nice if you're interested in seeing a slower side of Hue and don't mind being a little further away from the main tourist attractions.

Thủy Biều is also a great area to explore by bicycle. You can cycle through small lanes, past gardens and traditional homes, and stop for a local meal along the way. It's much less about sightseeing from one attraction to the next and more about simply enjoying the surroundings.

Exploring the village around Hue

This is also where I'd recommend considering a garden-style resort such as Pilgrimage Village. You can still reach the Imperial City and royal tombs relatively easily, but when you return to your accommodation, it feels like you've left the city behind.

On the downside you won't have restaurants and cafés on every corner. You'll need transport to get into central Hue, so this area is better for those who enjoy having a peaceful hotel to come back to rather than those who want to walk out the door and immediately be surrounded by restaurants

How Many Days Should You Stay in Hue?

I'd recommend at least two nights in Hue, especially if you want to see the Imperial City, a couple of royal tombs, Thien Mu Pagoda and some of the city's other attractions.

Three nights would be even better if you like travelling slowly. That gives you time to explore the historical sights without rushing and still have time for experiences such as cycling around Thủy Biều, visiting the incense village or trying more of Hue's famous food.

If you're simply passing through central Vietnam and have limited time, two nights is enough to see the highlights.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Hue

There's no single best area to stay in Hue because it really depends on what you want from your trip.

If you're visiting Hue for the first time and want things to be easy, Phú Hội is the best all-rounder. You'll have restaurants, bars, cafés and plenty of accommodation within walking distance, and getting to the Imperial City and royal tombs is simple.

If history is the main reason you're visiting, I'd consider staying near the Imperial City. It is quieter and more atmospheric, although you'll have fewer restaurants and bars nearby.

And if you're looking for something completely different, Thủy Biều is the place to go. It's slower, greener and much more local, and staying here gives you a chance to experience the countryside around Hue rather than just the historical centre.

But don't worry too much about being perfectly positioned for every sight. Hue is relatively compact, and you'll probably use Grab, taxis, a scooter or a bicycle at some point anyway.

The most important thing is to choose an area that matches how you actually want to travel.
