Phu Quoc is often described as one of Vietnam's most beautiful island destinations, with white-sand beaches, turquoise water and plenty of resorts to choose from. But one thing I learned is that where you stay can make a huge difference to your experience.

The island is much bigger than you might expect, and its different areas offer very different experiences. You'll find everything from busy tourist towns and purpose-built entertainment complexes to quiet fishing villages and secluded beach resorts. And while Duong Dong is often recommended as the best place to stay, I wouldn't necessarily agree.

Personally, I found Duong Dong a little underwhelming. It's convenient because it’s located in the middle of the island, but you still have to travel pretty far no matter what you want to do on the island, and the beaches there were a bit disappointing.

Phu Quoc

If you're coming to Phu Quoc for beautiful beaches and a relaxing island getaway, I'd much rather stay in the south, where you'll find some of the island's nicest stretches of sand. Yes, it’s more touristy, but honestly all of Phu Quoc is so you wont escape it completely no matter where you go.

My advice is to decide what you want to do in Phu Quoc first, then choose your accommodation around that. Rather than spending your holiday travelling back and forth across the island, pick an area that suits your plans and enjoy it properly.

In this guide, I'll walk you through the best areas to stay in Phu Quoc, what each one is actually like, and the hotels I'd recommend for different budgets and travel styles.

Quick Guide: What Is the Best Area to Stay in Phu Quoc?

My personal recommendation is to base yourself in the south of Phu Quoc, particularly around Khem Beach, if you’re visiting primarily for the beaches. If you want to explore the island more widely, choose your base according to your planned activities rather than assuming Duong Dong is the most convenient option.

Map of the Best Hotels on Phu Quoc

Below you'll find a map where I've pinned my favourite hotels in Phu Quoc to make it easier for you to navigate when you're looking for where you want to base yourself.

Khem Beach and Sunset Town – My Pick for the Best Beaches in Phu Quoc

If you're visiting Phu Quoc for its beaches, I'd personally start by looking at the southern part of the island. Khem Beach and Bai Sao are two of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Phu Quoc, with pale sand, clear water and a more tropical feel.

Khem Beach is particularly appealing if you want a relaxing beach holiday. It's home to several high-end resorts, and the atmosphere is generally quieter than the main tourist centre. You can spend your days swimming, enjoying the beach and making the most of your hotel without feeling like you need to be constantly on the move.

Khem beach

Nearby, you'll also find find Sunset Town, one of Phu Quoc's most distinctive developments. With colourful Mediterranean-inspired buildings, waterfront promenades, staircases and viewpoints overlooking the sea. It's also home to the Hon Thom cable car, which takes you across the water to Hon Thom Island.

I think Sunset Town is worth visiting, particularly around sunset when the views are lovely. However, it's important to know that the area is purpose-built for tourism and has a very different atmosphere from a traditional Vietnamese town. Some people love the polished, themed setting, while others may find it a little artificial.

The main downside of this area is that it's less convenient for exploring the north of the island. You'll have fewer independent restaurants and cafés than in Duong Dong, but there are still more than enough close by. You’ll also likely rely on taxis or your hotel for transport. But if your idea of a holiday is spending time on beautiful beaches rather than ticking off every attraction, I think that's a worthwhile trade-off.

Duong Dong and Long Beach – Convenient, but Not My Favourite Part of Phu Quoc

Duong Dong is often described as the best area to stay in Phu Quoc, particularly for first-time visitors. It's the island's main town and tourist hub, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, cafés, shops and services. You'll also find the popular Phu Quoc Night Market here, where you can try local seafood and Vietnamese street food.

On paper, it sounds like the perfect base. You have everything close by, and it's easy to arrange tours, rent a scooter or head out for dinner. Long Beach, just south of town, also has a number of beachfront hotels and bars where you can enjoy the sunset.

Duong Dong

However, I personally found Duong Dong a little underwhelming and not quite as appealing as I had expected. While it's convenient and has plenty going on, I wouldn't necessarily choose to stay here just because it's the main tourist area. If you're coming to Phu Quoc for beautiful beaches and a relaxing island experience, I think there are more appealing places to base yourself.

That doesn't mean you should avoid Duong Dong altogether. It's worth visiting for the night market, restaurants and a taste of the island's busier side. And if you enjoy having lots of dining options and amenities nearby, it could still be the right choice for you.

My advice is simply not to book accommodation here automatically. Think about what you want to do during your stay and choose your base accordingly.

Ong Lang Beach – Best Area to Stay in Phu Quoc for a Relaxed Beach Holiday

If Duong Dong sounds a little too busy for your taste, but you want to stay in the centre of the island, Ong Lang Beach is one of the first places I'd look at. Located on the west coast, north of the main town, Ong Lang has a much more laid-back atmosphere, with boutique resorts, tropical gardens and smaller stretches of beach.

This is the kind of place where you can wake up, have a slow breakfast, spend the afternoon by the pool or sea and finish the day watching the sunset. There are restaurants and cafés dotted around the area, so you don't necessarily need to stay inside your resort all day, although you'll have fewer options than in Duong Dong.

The accommodation here ranges from simple bungalows to high-end eco-resorts, and many properties are designed to blend into the surrounding greenery. It's a particularly good area for couples, slow travellers and anyone who prefers a more natural setting over large hotel complexes.

Keep in mind that Ong Lang isn't one continuous stretch of beach. The coastline is made up of smaller bays and rocky sections, so check the exact beach access for your hotel before booking if being directly on the sand is important to you.

Ganh Dau and Bai Dai – Best Area to Stay in Phu Quoc for Families and Theme Parks

The northern part of Phu Quoc is a very different experience from Duong Dong and Ong Lang. Around Ganh Dau and Bai Dai, you'll find some of the island's largest resorts, wide sandy beaches and major entertainment attractions, including VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari and Grand World.

This is the area to consider if you're travelling with children or want a holiday where everything is organised around resort facilities and activities. Many hotels have large swimming pools, kids' clubs, restaurants and private beach areas, so you can easily spend most of your time within the resort.

WinWonder, Phu Quoc

Grand World is a purpose-built entertainment and shopping complex with themed architecture, restaurants and evening activities. It's worth knowing that the northern resort area has a very developed, tourist-oriented feel. If you're looking for traditional Vietnamese island life, this probably isn't where you'll find it.

Another thing to consider is the distance from Duong Dong. The north is less convenient if you want to visit the night market or explore the island's southern attractions regularly. However, if your plans revolve around the theme parks and resort facilities, that may not matter at all.

Final Thoughts: Where Should You Stay in Phu Quoc?

Choosing where to stay in Phu Quoc really comes down to what kind of holiday you're after. The island is large, and the different areas offer very different experiences, so I wouldn't recommend choosing your hotel based on convenience alone.

Personally, I'd base myself in the south of Phu Quoc, especially if beautiful beaches are high on your list. Khem Beach and the surrounding area offer a more relaxed setting, and I'd much rather spend my days enjoying the coastline than staying somewhere simply because it's the main tourist hub.

Duong Dong is worth visiting, but I wouldn't say it's a must-stay area. It has plenty of restaurants, shops and services, but I found it a little underwhelming compared with what I'd hoped for from Phu Quoc. If you want to experience the night market or explore the town, you can always visit without making it your base.

Ong Lang is another great option if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, while the north makes sense for families planning to visit VinWonders and Vinpearl Safari. And if you're interested in the cable car and island-hopping tours, staying around An Thoi can save you time.

Ultimately, my biggest piece of advice is to plan your Phu Quoc itinerary first and then choose where to stay. Don't feel like you have to base yourself in Duong Dong just because it's the most well-known area. Pick the part of the island that appeals to you most, find a hotel you love, and enjoy your time there.
