Ninh Binh is one of those places in Vietnam that looks almost too beautiful to be real. You’ll be surrounded by limestone mountains, beautiful rice paddies, rivers, caves and the traditional rowboats that take you through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. It’s often called "Ha Long Bay on land", and I definitely understand why. It's a destination that deserves more than just a quick stop on a northern Vietnam itinerary.

Most people come to Ninh Binh on a day trip form Hanoi, but I ended up staying two weeks here just exploring the stunning area. That also means I found some really great spots to stay!

Choosing where to stay in Ninh Binh, can be a bit straightforward if you just want to base yourself in Tam Coc, but you can also venture a bit further out and get a more local feel to your stay. The main sights in Ninh Binh are spread across the countryside so where you stay will definitely shape how you experience the area.

You can choose a room in the middle of Tam Coc village, where restaurants and cafes are just around the corner, or book a peaceful bungalow surrounded by rice fields and limestone cliffs. There are also plenty of family-run homestays that offer a more personal experience and a chance to enjoy the slower pace of rural Vietnam.

For most people, Tam Coc is the best area to stay in Ninh Binh, particularly if it's your first visit. It offers the widest choice of accommodation, restaurants, cafes and bicycle rentals, while keeping you close to many of the region's main attractions.

However, don't overlook the countryside just outside the village. The road leading towards Bich Dong Pagoda is especially beautiful, with accommodation tucked between rice fields and limestone mountains. If you're looking for a peaceful stay with stunning views, this area might be exactly what you're after.

Tam Coc: Best for First-Time Visitors and Solo Travellers

Tam Coc is the heart of the traveller scene in Ninh Binh. It's filled with lively cafés, restaurants, river views and bicycle-friendly paths that make it the easiest and most social area to stay in. You're surrounded by beautiful scenery but still have everything you need within walking distance.

The village is built around the Ngo Dong River, where the famous Tam Coc boat trips begin. You'll find plenty of places to grab breakfast, enjoy a coffee or have dinner after a day exploring the countryside. There are also massage shops, small convenience stores and bicycle rentals, making it a particularly convenient base if you're travelling independently.

The main downside is that Tam Coc has become increasingly popular, and the centre can feel quite busy, especially during peak season. If you prefer a quieter stay, look for accommodation just outside Tam Coc centre, where you can enjoy the scenery while remaining close to everything.

The Countryside: Best for Beautiful Homestays and a Rural Escape

Some of the most magical stays in Ninh Binh are tucked away in the countryside, particularly around Hoa Lu, the Mua Cave area and Bich Dong Pagoda. Here you'll find small homestays, eco-style bungalows and boutique hotels surrounded by nature.

This is where you can experience a different side of Vietnam. You'll hear roosters in the morning, see fireflies at dusk and feel like you're part of rural life rather than staying in a tourist centre. The scenery is stunning, with rice paddies, limestone mountains and little country roads that are perfect for exploring by bicycle.

The area around Bich Dong Pagoda is particularly beautiful. It's close enough to Tam Coc to visit the village for dinner, but far enough away to enjoy a much quieter atmosphere. You can visit the pagoda early in the morning, cycle through the surrounding countryside and spend the afternoon relaxing at your accommodation.

The Mua Cave area is another good option, especially if you want to visit the viewpoint early in the morning or around sunset. Staying nearby means you won't have to travel far to enjoy one of Ninh Binh's most famous views.

The main thing to consider is transport. Restaurants and shops are more spread out in the countryside, so you'll want to rent a bicycle or motorbike, arrange a driver or choose accommodation that offers meals.

Trang An: Best for Nature Lovers and Peace Seekers

Trang An is quieter than Tam Coc, with fewer restaurants and cafes but some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Ninh Binh. Limestone cliffs surround you in every direction, and it genuinely feels like you're staying in the middle of a nature reserve.

The area is best known for its spectacular boat tours, which take you through caves, past temples and between huge karst formations. But there's much more to Trang An than the boat trip itself. The surrounding countryside is incredibly peaceful, and simply cycling or walking along the small roads can be a highlight of your stay.

If you're seeking peace and quiet, this is the spot for you. Many of the accommodation options are small homestays or eco-style bungalows with gardens, swimming pools and mountain views. It's the kind of place where you can spend the afternoon relaxing at your hotel instead of feeling like you need to be out sightseeing every minute.

The trade-off is that Trang An is more spread out than Tam Coc. You'll have fewer restaurants within walking distance, so it's worth checking whether your accommodation has its own restaurant or offers meals. Having a bicycle or motorbike will also make exploring much easier.

Are Homestays in Ninh Binh Worth It?

Absolutely! In fact, staying in a homestay is one of the best ways to experience Ninh Binh.

Unlike larger hotels, many homestays in the region are family-run properties with just a handful of rooms. They're often surrounded by gardens, rice fields or limestone mountains, and the atmosphere is generally much more personal than you'll find at a conventional hotel.

One of the things I love about the idea of staying in a Ninh Binh homestay is that it encourages you to slow down. You can enjoy breakfast in the garden, borrow a bicycle to explore the surrounding villages, and return in the evening to a peaceful setting away from the tourist crowds.

Many homestays also offer practical services that make travelling around Ninh Binh easier, including bicycle rentals, motorbike rentals, laundry, transport arrangements and home-cooked meals. Some even have swimming pools, so you don't necessarily have to sacrifice comfort for a more authentic experience.

The main thing to remember is that homestays vary considerably in quality. Some are beautifully maintained boutique properties, while others are much more basic.

Tam Coc vs. Trang An: Which Is Better?

Both areas are beautiful, and both offer easy access to the main attractions. The difference is in the atmosphere and how you want to spend your evenings.

Tam Coc is the more convenient choice. You'll have restaurants, cafes and shops nearby, and it's easier to explore without arranging transport every time you leave your accommodation. It's particularly suitable for first-time visitors and solo travellers.

Trang An, on the other hand, is quieter and more rural. The scenery is spectacular, and the accommodation tends to focus on nature and relaxation. It's a great option for couples and anyone who wants to spend more time enjoying the landscape.

If you're unsure, I'd recommend staying in Tam Coc but choosing a property just outside the village centre, towards Bich Dong Pagoda. This gives you the best of both worlds with beautiful countryside surroundings and easy access to restaurants and attractions.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Ninh Binh?

I'd recommend spending at least two nights in Ninh Binh if your schedule allows. You can technically visit the main highlights in a single day, but the region is so beautiful that rushing through it feels like a missed opportunity.

With two nights, you'll have time for a boat trip in either Tam Coc or Trang An, the viewpoint at Mua Cave, and a leisurely cycle through the countryside. If you have three nights, you can explore at a more relaxed pace and add places like Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Bich Dong Pagoda or Cuc Phuong National Park.

Staying overnight also gives you the chance to enjoy the landscape after the day-trip crowds have left. And if you've chosen a beautiful homestay or boutique hotel, you'll want some time to enjoy it rather than just returning to sleep.

Is it better to stay in Tam Coc or Trang An?

Is Ninh Binh worth staying overnight?

I'd recommend at least two nights if your itinerary allows. I stayed for two weks and still feel I could’ve stayed longer.

For most travellers, I'd recommend staying in Tam Coc or the countryside just outside the village towards Bich Dong Pagoda. You'll have easy access to the main attractions while still being able to enjoy the peaceful surroundings that make Ninh Binh so unique.

If you prefer a quieter retreat, Trang An is another wonderful option, especially for couples and nature lovers.

Whichever area you choose, try to leave some time in your itinerary to simply enjoy where you are. Rent a bicycle, follow the little roads between the rice paddies, stop for a coffee with a view and let Ninh Binh work its magic. It’s one of my favourite parts of Vietnam so I strongly recommend not rushing through it.
