And with so much of the island's appeal lying in its natural beauty, choosing the right base is just as important as deciding what to see and do.

The island is best known as a gateway to Lan Ha Bay, where dramatic limestone karsts rise from the water. It's also home to Cat Ba National Park, quiet fishing villages, caves, hiking trails and a handful of beaches. Whether you're visiting for a couple of nights to explore the bay or planning a longer stay to slow down and enjoy island life, there's an area to suit your travel style.

But where should you actually stay on Cat Ba Island?

Most visitors choose between Cat Ba Town, the Cat Co beach area and the quieter countryside. There are also more remote options for anyone looking to get away from the crowds altogether. In this guide, I'll walk you through the best areas to stay on Cat Ba Island, what to expect from each, and the hotels and homestays worth considering.

Where to Stay on Cat Ba Island: An Overview

If you're short on time, here's a quick overview of the best areas to stay on Cat Ba Island.

For most first-time visitors, Cat Ba Town is the most practical base. However, if you're looking for a more relaxing island escape, I'd consider staying outside the centre or booking a resort near the beaches.

One thing worth keeping in mind is that Cat Ba has seen significant development in recent years. Construction has affected parts of the town and waterfront, so it's worth checking recent guest reviews and the exact location of your accommodation before booking.

Cat Ba Town – Best for First-Time Visitors and Solo Travellers

Cat Ba Town is the main hub of the island and where most travellers choose to stay. It's built around a sheltered harbour, with hotels, restaurants, cafés and tour agencies lining the waterfront and surrounding streets. It's honestly not the prettiest town in Vietnam, but it is convenient, lively and a great base for exploring the island.

The biggest advantage of staying in Cat Ba Town is that you can do so much on foot. You'll find plenty of places to eat, cafés to spend a lazy morning in, and tour operators arranging trips to Lan Ha Bay. It's also easy to organise motorbike rentals, transport around the island and onward journeys to Hanoi or Ninh Binh.

If you're travelling solo, Cat Ba Town is particularly convenient. There are hostels and social hotels where you can meet other travellers, and you'll never be far from somewhere to grab dinner or a drink.

The downside is that Cat Ba Town can be busy, especially during weekends and Vietnamese holidays. Some areas have also been heavily affected by construction, so I recommend checking recent reviews before booking. If you're a light sleeper, look for a hotel on a quieter side street rather than directly above a busy restaurant or bar.

When I visited in 2026 it looked completely different than any videos and guides I found and it seemed like the construction would keep going for quite some time. Many of the hotels along the waterfront used to have great sunset views, but that view is now obstructed by building sites closer to the water. I’m not sure how long this will go on and I will try to keep this post as updated as possible. But for now, I would recommend staying a bit further up in the city if you decide to base yourself in Cat Bat Town.

Cat Co Beaches – Best for Beach Lovers and Resort Stays

If your idea of a holiday involves waking up to sea views, spending afternoons by the pool and having the beach just steps away, the Cat Co area is the place to stay.

The three Cat Co beaches sit just outside Cat Ba Town, tucked between the cliffs and the sea. They're close enough to town to make exploring easy, but the atmosphere is more focused on resort-style relaxation. This is where you'll find some of the island's larger hotels, with swimming pools, spas, restaurants and panoramic views.

Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 3 are the most developed beaches, while Cat Co 2 is generally the quieter of the three. The beaches are popular with visitors, particularly during the summer and on weekends, so don't expect a completely secluded tropical paradise. Still, the combination of coastal scenery and hotel facilities makes this a good option for travellers who want to enjoy the island at a slower pace.

I’ll be honest and say that these aren’t the best beaches I’ve seen in my life, so I personally wouldn’t come all the way to Cat Ba for a long beach holiday. However, Cat Co 3 was my favourite and a beach I definitely could spend a couple of days relaxing at.

If you want to experience a quieter, more rural side of Cat Ba Island, consider staying outside the main town. The island's interior is a completely different world from the waterfront, with green mountains, valleys, small villages and winding roads that are easy to explore by motorbike.

This is where you'll find homestays, eco-lodges and bungalow-style accommodation surrounded by nature. It's a lovely way to slow down, especially if you've been travelling around Vietnam for a while and want a break from busy towns.

The countryside is also a convenient base for exploring Cat Ba National Park, visiting caves and discovering some of the island's less-visited corners. However, you'll need to plan your transport. Restaurants and shops are more spread out, and having a motorbike or arranging taxis through your accommodation is essential.

Stay on the Water in a Floating House in Lan Ha Bay

If you want to experience Cat Ba Island from a completely different perspective, consider spending a night in a floating house in Lan Ha Bay. Rather than waking up in a hotel room, you'll open your curtains to limestone karsts rising out of the water, fishing boats passing by and the peaceful sounds of life on the bay.

Floating houses are traditionally part of the local fishing communities, and some have been adapted to welcome visitors. Accommodation is generally simple and rustic, but that's part of the charm. You won't find the same facilities as in a resort, but you'll gain something much more memorable: the chance to experience the bay after the day-trip boats have left and enjoy its quieter moments.

This experience was so high on my list when we were in Cat Ba, but because we had such bad luck with the weather the boats didn’t run and we were actually stuck on the island for almost a week. That meant we got to explore the island in depth, but I never made it out here. However, I do think it looks amazing and I’m really sorry I missed it.

My tip is to spend one night in a floating house and the rest of your stay in Cat Ba Town. That way, you get to enjoy the unique experience of sleeping on the water without giving up the convenience of having restaurants, cafés and transport connections nearby.

This is probably the most important decision when choosing where to stay on Cat Ba Island.

If you're visiting for the first time, I would generally recommend staying in Cat Ba Town. It's the easiest base for arranging boat trips, finding restaurants and getting around without having to plan every little detail. It's particularly convenient if you're only spending two or three nights on the island.

However, if you're staying longer or prioritising peace and quiet, staying outside the centre can make your trip feel much more relaxing. The countryside offers a completely different atmosphere, while the Cat Co area is better suited to those who want a resort holiday.

Are Homestays Worth It on Cat Ba Island?

Absolutely. While Cat Ba has plenty of hotels and resorts, staying in a homestay can be one of the nicest ways to experience the island.

Many homestays are family-run, with hosts who can help organise boat trips, motorbike rentals and transport. Some have swimming pools, gardens and on-site restaurants, so you don't necessarily have to sacrifice comfort to enjoy a more personal stay.

Homestays are particularly appealing in the countryside, where they offer a chance to experience a quieter side of Cat Ba. If you're travelling on a budget, they're also worth considering as an alternative to the larger hotels.

Just remember that the location matters. A homestay outside town may look close on a map, but you'll need to factor in transport for meals and activities. If you don't plan to rent a motorbike, check with your accommodation about taxi availability before booking.

Things to Consider Before Booking Your Cat Ba Accommodation

Before you book your hotel, there are a few things worth keeping in mind.

Check the exact location. Cat Ba Town is relatively compact, but staying on a busy waterfront street can feel very different from staying on a quiet side road. Especially since there is so much construction work going on along the water. If you want peace and quiet, read recent reviews and check the location on a map.

Consider how you'll get around. If you stay in town, you can walk to many restaurants and tour operators. If you choose a countryside homestay or remote resort, you'll likely need a motorbike, taxi or transport arranged by your accommodation. Taxis aren’t as easy to get on Cat Ba as many other places in Vietnam, so I would rent a motorbike if you want to explore.

Book ahead during busy periods. Cat Ba is a popular destination for Vietnamese, particularly during summer and public holidays. If you're travelling at these times, it's worth booking your accommodation in advance.

Personally, I'd choose my accommodation based on how much time I had on the island. For a short visit focused on exploring Lan Ha Bay and the national park, I'd prioritise a convenient location in or near town. For a longer stay, I'd be tempted by a peaceful homestay or a floating homestay where I could enjoy the scenery and slow down for a few days.

Whichever area you choose, make sure you leave enough time to get out on the water. The limestone cliffs, hidden beaches and emerald-green waters of Lan Ha Bay are what make Cat Ba Island so special.
