Unlike larger Vietnamese cities, Phong Nha doesn’t have a huge selection of luxury hotels or international chains. Instead, you’ll find some really nice family-run homestays, boutique farmstays, eco-lodges and a handful of comfortable hotels, many of which offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the best areas to stay in Phong Nha and share some of the best accommodation options for different travel styles and budgets, including my personal favourite that I still dream about.

Quick Answer: Where Is the Best Area to Stay in Phong Nha?
For most travellers, Phong Nha town might be the best place to stay, especially if it’s your first visit and you’re only there for a night or two. It’s the main hub for visitors, with restaurants, cafés, tour operators, scooter rentals and the boat pier for trips to Phong Nha Cave all close together.
However, if you have a little more time, I’d seriously consider staying outside the centre. The countryside around Phong Nha is just as much a part of the experience as the caves themselves, and some of the most memorable places to stay are tucked away among rice fields, rivers and limestone hills.
Below you’ll see my three favourite hotels that I recommend checking out first. This is my personal favourite, and I highly recommend staying there if you want a relaxing, but fun stay in Phong Nha.

This is one of the best-known places to stay in the area, and for good reason. Set among the rice fields, it has a relaxed boutique-hotel atmosphere, a swimming pool and a welcoming communal space where you can unwind after a day of exploring.

Below you'll find a map where I've pinned my favourite hotels in Phong Nha to make it easier for you to navigate when you're looking for where you want to base yourself.
Phong Nha Town – Best for First-Time Visitors
If you’re visiting Phong Nha for the first time, staying in or close to the main village might be very handy. This is where you’ll find most of the restaurants, cafés, hostels and tour operators, making it the most convenient base for exploring the national park and cave system.
The village is small and easy to get around, and you can walk to many of the places you’ll need during your stay. It’s also the most practical choice if you’re arriving by sleeper bus or planning to join an organised cave tour with an early start.
Phong Nha town has a relaxed, backpacker-friendly atmosphere. You’ll find everything from social hostels with swimming pools and bars to simple guesthouses and comfortable boutique hotels. It’s not a destination for nightlife, but there are enough restaurants and places to have a drink in the evening if you want.

Along the Son River – Best for Scenic Views
If you want to stay close to the village but prefer a little more peace and quiet, look for accommodation along the Son River. The river runs through the heart of Phong Nha, with limestone mountains rising in the distance and traditional boats passing along the water.
Staying by the river gives you a different perspective on the area, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when the landscape is at its most peaceful. You’re still close enough to reach the village’s restaurants and tour operators, but you can return to your accommodation and enjoy the views away from the busier main road.

The Countryside and Rice Fields – Best for a Relaxing Stay
One of the best things about visiting Phong Nha is getting out of the village and into the surrounding countryside. The landscape is filled with rice fields, small villages, rivers and towering limestone formations, and several accommodation options are tucked away in these peaceful surroundings.
Staying outside the centre is a great choice if you want to slow down and enjoy the scenery between cave excursions. Many farm stays and eco-lodges have swimming pools, gardens, bicycles and on-site restaurants, so you can spend a lazy afternoon relaxing rather than heading back into town.
The downside is that you’ll need to plan your transport a little more carefully. Some properties are a short ride from the village, while others are more remote, so check the location before booking and ask your accommodation about scooter rentals or transfers. We had no problem with this when we stayed outside the town and either got transport from our hotel or booked a Grab when we needed it.

Best Hotels in the Countryside

Should You Stay in Phong Nha Town or Outside the Centre?
If you’re only spending one or two nights in Phong Nha, I’d choose accommodation in or close to the village. It makes getting around much easier, particularly if you’re planning to visit Phong Nha Cave, join a guided tour or catch a bus the following morning.
If you have three nights or more, staying outside the centre becomes more appealing. You’ll have time to enjoy the countryside, relax by the pool and explore at a slower pace without feeling like you need to be close to everything.
Personally, I’d choose a place with a swimming pool and some kind of outdoor space where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery. Phong Nha is a destination where you’ll likely spend a lot of time outdoors, and having somewhere peaceful to return to makes the experience even better.

How Many Nights Should You Stay in Phong Nha?
I recommend spending at least two nights in Phong Nha, although three nights is even better if your schedule allows.
With two nights, you’ll have one full day to explore the caves and surrounding area, although you’ll need to be selective about what you do. Three nights gives you more flexibility to visit different caves, explore the countryside and enjoy your accommodation rather than simply using it as a place to sleep.
If you’re planning a multi-day cave expedition, you’ll need to add the tour duration to your itinerary and check whether you need to stay an extra night before or after the trek.
Where to Stay in Phong Nha: Frequently Asked Questions
Is it better to stay in Phong Nha or Dong Hoi?
For most travellers visiting the caves, staying in Phong Nha is the better choice. Dong Hoi is the nearest city and has an airport and train station, but it’s around 45–50 km from Phong Nha, meaning you’ll spend considerably more time travelling if you base yourself there. I’d only stay in Dong Hoi if you have a late arrival, an early departure or a specific reason to be near the city.
Do you need a scooter to get around Phong Nha?
Not necessarily. If you stay in the village, you can walk to many restaurants and tour operators, and organised tours often include transport to the caves. However, a scooter or private transfer gives you more flexibility to explore the countryside and visit attractions further from the centre. You can also rent bikes to explore if that’s ore comfortable. Many of the hotels I checked rent out bikes for a decent price.

Are there luxury hotels in Phong Nha?
Phong Nha isn’t known for large five-star resorts, but there are several comfortable boutique hotels and farmstays with swimming pools, beautiful surroundings and excellent hospitality. If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, I’d focus on properties such as Phong Nha Farmstay, Chày Lập Farmstay or Karst Residence.
Final Thoughts: Where Should You Stay in Phong Nha?
Phong Nha is one of those destinations where the accommodation can be just as much a part of the experience as the activities themselves. Whether you choose a social hostel in the village, a riverside homestay or a peaceful farmstay surrounded by rice fields, there are plenty of lovely places to make your base.
If it’s your first visit, I’d stick to Phong Nha town or somewhere just outside it for convenience. But if you have a few extra days, don’t overlook the countryside. Waking up to views of the limestone mountains and spending a quiet afternoon by the pool is a pretty wonderful way to experience this part of Vietnam. I still dream about our relaxing stay here, so if you have some extra time in Phong Nha I highly recommend checking it out.
